Prajna Dutta[1] (born 15 June 1988) is an interdisciplinary artist who expresses himself through music, martial arts and audio visual presentations. He is known in the industry as an award-winning thinker and maker.

Early Life

Dutta was born on 15th June, 1988 in Kolkata to Saswati Bandyopadhyay and Pranay Dutta. Other than studies as a child, he took great interest in music, martial arts and cinema during his growing years.

Education

He did his schooling from St. Xavier's School Kolkata. He studied B.A.(English Literature) and completed his graduation from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. Later, he went to Dartington College of Arts to study music composition and Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute for further studies in direction and screenplay writing.

On the other hand, Prajna continued his studies of Martial Arts seriously. He became one of the first Indians to be conferred the title of Guro under Punong Mandirigma Allan Fami in the Kalahi System of Filipino Martial Arts. He is an internationally certified instructor, a marksman and holds experience in teaching men, women and children from diverse backgrounds. In 2018 he was ranked fifth at The Labanan Ng Mandirigma, an international knife sparring championship held at History Con Manila.[2]

Career

Prajna has always been an artist. Apart from academics, it was music that he was deeply interested in.

The trained singer-songwriter started earning love and respect from music enthusiasts since his early years. His sense of music made him a composer for many projects.[3] Not only guitar, but Prajna is proficient with many other musical instruments as he doesn’t stop at a destination but loves to wander and explore.

Besides being a man of music, Prajna is equally zealous to explore different art forms. Hence he started making documentaries and short films too. His cinematic creations not only won awards but also garnered the attention of viewers.

As a martial artist, Prajna has achieved several accomplishments. He has recently become "Guro" or Master as he completed his training of Kalahi Filipino Martial Art in Philippines under the supervision of Kalahi Grandmaster Allan Fami. Dutta is well admired in his circle for his passion in art forms and the field of music.[4]

He continues to collaborate with national and international projects on a regular basis to bridge the gap among movements, images and sounds.

In October 2019, Prajna Dutta composed his new song, “Natun Abeshe”[5] with a heart-touching lyric and soothing rhythm.

He was invited to perform at the Chair Poetry Evenings at Kolkata in the same year for performing on the day dedicated to poets and poetry all over the world.[6]

He embarked on yet another directorial career of shooting the “Kolkata Song” sung by Sanjoy Das and Joy Sarkar, a music celebrating the search of a soul in a city.[7]

He collaborated with Durnibar Saha on the reprise of the song “Bhalo Achi Bhalo Theko”[8] and laid his piano verses in the song “Ami Banglay Gaan Gai”.[9]

He composed the song “Ki Abastha”, the first song of the infotainment series as an initiative to create financial awareness among the mass, in association with Dayco India.[10]

He composed a poetry-oriented song “Love Aaj Kal Forever” on Valentine’s Day to celebrate the season of love and its beautiful language.[11]

In 2012, he composed music for the controversial Bengali film ‘Nandigramer Chokher Paani’ and in 2015 for national award-winning director Ashoke Viswanathan’s, “1+1=3”.[12]

He has made ‘The Sound Wanderer’, a film on the musical life of his guitar guru Amyt Datta, ‘Pachar’[12], a film on woman and child trafficking supported by West Bengal Police, ‘Shei Framey’, a short film about scattered thoughts and tossed relationships fetched him a Special Festival Mention at the 5th Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival and the 7th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival 2017.

As a music composer he has also composed for Films Division India documentaries “Trance in Motion” and “Yes We Can” and also in ace director Subhadra Roychowdhury's Bengali film ‘Duniya’ in 2017.

As an independent singer-songwriter, Prajna has an Album titled ‘Yaadon Mein’ and an EP ‘1+1=2’ to his credit along with numerous musical collaborations which have earned him accolades.[12]

Awards and Nominations

  • His first short film as a student of SRFTI, “JE RAATE” was screened at IIFI Goa 2013 and at the “ImagineIndia International Film Festival”(IIFF), Madrid in May 2014.
  • His first documentary as a student of SRFTI, “WITHIN AND WITHOUT” was screened at the Cut.In Film Festival 2013 in Mumbai.
  • His playback project, “City Lights” starring Nigel Akkara and Elena Kazan won the Best Music Video award at the 3rd Noida International Film Festival 2016, Best Music Video award at 6th Dada SahebPhalke Film Festival 2016, Best Music Video award at the 5th Bangalore Shorts Film Festival 2016 and Best Music Video Award at the 5th Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival 2016.
  • "Baaji”[13], his diploma film won Special Festival Mention at the 6th Dada SahebPhalke Film Festival 2016, Best Edit (Jury) at the 5th Bangalore Shorts Film Festival 2016, Official Selection at the 5th Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival 2016 and Best Director Award at the 2nd NEZ International Film Festival.
  • Prajna won the Infinite Vistas Award (Best Documentary) at the NEZ International Film Festival 2015 for the film “The Sound Wanderer”, that he made on the musical life of his guitar guru AmytDatta, under the banner of Films Division India. The movie was an official selection at the 4th Delhi Shorts International Film Festival 2015, 3rd Kameleon International Film Festival, 4th Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival, Imphal International Short Film Festival 2016. It won the Best Music Documentary Award at 1st APJ Abdul Kalam International Film Festival in 2017.
  • His film “Pachar”[14] based on woman and child trafficking, won the critics’ choice award at NEZ International Film Festival 2015 and the Festival Mention Jury award at the 4th Delhi Shorts International Film Festival 201. It achieved the Special Festival Mention award at the 4th Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival, official selection at the 21st Kolkata International Film Festival and Imphal International Short Film Festival 2016.
  • Prajna’s short film “SheiFramey”, is about scattered thoughts and disturbed relationships got him a Special Festival Mention at the 5th Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival and the 7th Dada SahebPhalke Film Festival 2017, Honourable Jury Mention at 6th Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival, Best Experimental Short at 3rd NEZ International Film Festival and Special Mention at Cardiff International Film Festival.
  • His short film Seesaw received nominations at Cefalu Film Festival 2019, Lift Off 2019, First Time Filmmaker sessions 2019 and a Jury Mention at Kolkata Shorts International Film Festival 2019
  • Certificate of Commendation from Gyeonggi Do Taekwondo Association, South Korea from the legendary Grandmaster Kim Kyung Duk at the 2018 Indo Korean Taekwondo Cultural Festival.
  • City Live Excellence Award 2019[15] for contribution as an independent filmmaker.
  • Literoma Young Achievers Award 2019 for contributions as an alternative artist and educator.
  • He, along with Shibayan Ganguly became the first Indians to be certified as Guro under the Kalahi FMA System and were conferred the international instructors license to teach this highly effective system of combat.[16]
