Prang Wat Chulamani (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is an ancient Khmer-style prang (tower) located in Phitsanulok Province, northern Thailand. It is the oldest standing monument in Phitsanulok and exhibits strong influence from Khmer architecture during the Angkorian period.

History

Prang Wat Chulamani was likely built during the late 12th to early 13th century, a period of strong Angkorian influence in northern Thailand. Its location along the Nan River suggests it was a religious site of strategic importance. Although originally constructed as a Hindu shrine, the temple was later adapted for Buddhist use as Theravada Buddhism became more prominent in the region.

Architecture

The structure features a central sandstone prang on a laterite base, adorned with stucco and carvings in Khmer style. The prang is characterized by its corbelled arch, stepped tiers, and niches that may once have held religious statues. Despite being smaller in scale compared to major Khmer temples, it retains classic elements found in Angkor-period religious monuments.

Conservation

The site has undergone restoration by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand, preserving its architectural integrity and historical context. The temple complex is part of an active monastery (Wat Chulamani), making it both a historical and religious site.

How to get there

The temple is located approximately 5 kilometers southeast of downtown Phitsanulok on the east bank of the Nan River. It is accessible by local transport, bicycle, or car. The site is frequently visited by both locals and tourists, especially during religious holidays.
