Vidya Jyothi Professor Prasad Katulanda
Prasad Katulanda (born Sri Lanka) is a Sri Lankan endocrinologist and physician known for clinical and population-focused research related to diabetes and endocrine disorders. He serves as a professor in medicine and head of the Department of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, and works as a consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.[1][2]
Early life and education
Katulanda was educated at Royal College, Colombo and later studied medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. He completed his MBBS with first class honours and subsequently obtained an MD and FRCP (London). He also earned a DPhil (Diabetic Medicine) from the University of Oxford.[3][4]
Academic and clinical career
Katulanda is a professor in medicine and head of the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Colombo, and a consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.[5] He established and leads the Diabetes Research Unit at the University of Colombo (founded in 2005).
His clinical training included work at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital (2003–2004) and advanced training at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM) in the United Kingdom (2004–2008). He also served as a registrar in general medicine at the University Medical Unit of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
Research and contributions
Katulanda’s research has focused on diabetes and related endocrine and metabolic conditions, including epidemiology, prevention, and management in Sri Lankan and South Asian populations.[6] He is described as having played a key role in building diabetes research capacity within the University of Colombo through the Diabetes Research Unit and related collaborative studies.
Professional service
Katulanda has held leadership roles in professional and specialty societies, including service as president of the Endocrine Society, secretary of the Ceylon College of Physicians, and involvement with the Endocrine Society of Sri Lanka.
Honors and awards
Katulanda has received the title **Vidya Jyothi** in recognition of his contributions to medical research.[7] He was also recognized as a **Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP)** awardee (medical research) by Junior Chamber International (Sri Lanka) in 2009.
