Prashant Mali

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Prashant Mali is a Professor of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). His research focuses on genome and transcriptome engineering, RNA editing, synthetic biology, and stem-cell engineering. His work includes the development and application of CRISPR-based genome editing methods, RNA editing technologies, and circular RNA platforms with applications in biological research and therapeutic development.[1][2][3]

Early life and education

Mali received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), where his research focused on biomedical sensors.[1]He later earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, with doctoral research emphasizing human pluripotent stem cell engineering.[1][4]

He subsequently conducted postdoctoral research in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, where he contributed to early efforts applying CRISPR/Cas systems for genome editing in eukaryotic cells.[1][4]

Academic career

In 2014, Mali joined the faculty of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego. He is currently a Professor in the Shu Chien–Gene Lay Department of Bioengineering, where he leads the Mali Lab. The laboratory integrates engineering, synthetic biology, genome and RNA engineering, and stem-cell biology to develop tools for biological research and translational applications.[1][2]

Research

Mali’s research spans several areas of biological engineering. His work includes genome and transcriptome engineering using CRISPR-based technologies, RNA editing approaches based on adenosine deaminases, and the development of circular RNA platforms designed to enhance RNA stability and persistence. His laboratory also employs human pluripotent stem cells to study gene regulation, cell fate determination, and disease-related processes.[2][5]

Research from the Mali Lab has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Nature Biomedical Engineering and has been reported by institutional and scientific media outlets.[5][6]

Entrepreneurship and translational work

Mali is a scientific co-founder or advisor to several biotechnology companies focused on translating genome and RNA engineering technologies into therapeutic platforms.

He is a co-founder of Shape Therapeutics, a biotechnology company developing RNA editing and gene therapy technologies. Shape Therapeutics has raised venture funding and entered strategic collaborations, including partnerships aimed at developing RNA-based therapies for neurological and rare diseases.[7][8]

Mali is also a co-founder of Boundless Bio, a biotechnology company focused on genome-driven approaches to cancer research and precision oncology.[9][10]

Recognition

Mali was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in recognition of contributions to genome and RNA engineering with translational impact.[11]

Publications and metrics

Mali’s publications span genome editing, RNA biology, and bioengineering, and his work has been widely cited.[12]
