The preHistorisch Dorp (English: prehistoric village) is an historic open air museum which can be found in the Genneper Parken region of the city of Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The preHistorisch Dorp is part of Eindhoven Museum.[1]. Using both archeological reconstructions and living history reenactments, the museum displays life in six different ages: the age of the hunter-gatherers, the age of the first farmers, the native-Roman era, the age of the Vikings and Franks, and finally the age of trade, cities and the Eighty Years’ War[2] The inhabitants of the village (known as time guides) welcome visitors on their acres , their farmhouses, and workshops and invite them to take a trip back in time. The inhabitants are dressed historically accurate and according to the age they live in. They provide tours, tell stories and demonstrate what day to day life was like for our ancestors. Guests are also welcome to take part in the various activities taking place such as making fire, archery, forging iron, throwing spears, making pottery, and weaving.
Visitors[edit]
The preHistorisch Dorp is a frequent destination for schools and fieldtrips. Various educational programs are on offer which can be seamlessly integrated into the school’s history lessons. During multi-day school camps, the pupils will be able to spend the night within the historical buildings. Furthermore the museum is open to the general public. The museum draws about 50.000 visitors each year.
Events[edit]
Each year a number of historical events take place at the prehistoric village. These include the largest Viking festival in the Netherlands, where craftsmen, traders, and warriors make camp in the village for thee full days. The medieval tournament and the historical food fest are other large yearly events.
History[edit]
In 1982, Eindhoven’s teaching academy decided to take the initiative to create a ‘prehistoric village’. The village was then build in the Genneper Parken under the leadership of Anneke Boonstra. In 1995 the museum made both the national and international news thanks to a unique experiment. For two moons (a prehistoric period of time comparable to a month), the Iron Age village was inhabited as people would have in that time period. Both archaeologists and historians were extremely enthusiastic about the experiment and its educational potential. Thanks to a European subsidy, the prehistoric village was expanded with reconstructions from the Eindhoven region’s middle ages. It was also given a new name; Historisch OpenluchtMuseum Eindhoven (HOME). In 2003, one of the museum’s Iron Age farmhouses, as well as a caretaker’s dwelling, were lost due to arson. In 2006, both were rebuilt. The reconstructed farmhouse is today’s Runderhoeve (English: beef farm). In 2012, HOME merged with Museum Kempenland Eindhoven (MKE) bringing 2500 years’ worth of history under one roof. The new organization was named Eindhoven Museum and was able bring the culture, art, and history of the region to life in its two locations[3].
In 2016 it was time for the open-air museum to return to its roots with a historical construction team as well as with a very recognizable new identity; the preHistorisch Dorp. The capitol H was added to emphasize that not only prehistoric times are shown here but history in general. Eindhoven Museum continues to exist as the collective name for both the preHistorisch Dorp as well as the collection of the former Museum Kempenland.
Awards[edit]
At the end of 2019 it was announced that the preHistorisch Dorp had been selected as the Kidsproof best museum in the province of Noord-Brabant for the third year in a row[4]. The decision was made after being inspected by children ages 12 years and younger. This yearly election is organized by Museumkids, an initiative of the Museumvereniging.
