The Preface Project (Preface) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in the United States that promotes early childhood literacy using multilingual methods and trained high school student “Ambassadors.” Preface was founded and headquartered in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
History
The Preface Project was founded in 2019 in Norcross, Georgia by a group of alumni from Princeton University, Yale University, and North Carolina State University as a way to address the rising childhood illiteracy crisis across America.[4][5] Founder and Executive Director, Jonathan "JT" Wu, has publicly cited his own personal upbringing as a second-generation American embraced by his tight-knit Georgia community as an inspiration for the community-driven Preface model.
Based on educational best practices and heavily informed by dialogic learning, instructional scaffolding techniques, and dyad pedagogy approaches, Preface developed a literacy model that pairs elementary school students with local high school reading partners based on common language and cultural backgrounds.[6][7]
The Preface Project launched its inaugural pilot program in partnership with Lilburn Elementary School and Berkmar High School in the 2019-2020 school year.[8] In its first year, the partnership moved enrolled young students from functional illiteracy to proficient or distinguished reading levels, as measured by the Georgia Milestones state achievement tests.[9]
In 2020, Preface was recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as an Innovative Bilingual Method to Promote Early Childhood Literacy.[10] Preface has since expanded to neighboring communities around the Southeast United States, establishing partnerships in South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee.
In August 2020 Preface moved much of its programming to a virtual environment in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, partnering with technology companies like Setmore and Google to create a Virtual Portal featuring secure remote meeting spaces, standardized training tools, orientation videos, multilingual stories, and bilingual videos to facilitate student engagement.[11][12]

The Preface Project currently partners with schools in the following cities:
- Chattanooga, Tenn.
- Lilburn, Ga.

Additionally, Preface has distributed hand sanitizer and daily meals to students and families in Gwinnett County, Georgia during the COVID-19 pandemic.[13][14][15]
