Prem Narayan Shukla [1] (2 August 1914 – 12 January 1991) was an Indian Hindi litterateur, professor , writer and editor.

Biography[edit]

Prem Narayan Shukla was born on August 2, 1914 in Oriya village under Ghatampur tehsil of Kanpur district. His mother passed away when he was five years old, his father Shri Nand Kishore Shukla, a Vaidya. Early life was spent in many deprivations, but never gave up, struggling and moving forward in life.[citation needed] His entire education-initiation took place in Kanpur itself. He was one of the meritorious students of D. A. V. College, Kanpur. In 1941, the first place was secured in the first class in the examination of MA (Hindi Literature) from Agra University (at that time most of the colleges of Kanpur were under Agra University). In the 'Sahitya Ratna' examination of the All India Hindi Sahitya Sammelan also got the first position in the first class. In 1952, he Agra University (presently known as Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra) wrote 'Diverse Debates in Hindi Literature'.[2] Awarded Ph.D. on title management and D. Litt degrees on 'Sant Sahitya (Language Studies)' in 1965. Both these texts were honored by the Uttar Pradesh government. [3]

He started his life as a writer in the newspaper 'Pratap run by Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi. From 1943 onwards he worked as a lecturer in Hindi department at D. A.V. Degree College, Kanpur. Started work in and from 1962 to 1977 he held the post of Head of Department there. After retiring, he held the standard post of Distinguished Professor of University Grants Commission till 1982.[4] At the time of teaching, saint literature, literature were his favorite subjects. Many students completed their dissertations under his guidance. He was constantly associated with All India Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, Prayag and worked on the post of literature-minister for almost three decades.

In October 1940, Acharya Ramchandra Shukla had come to Kanpur for 15-20 days, at that time Prem Narayan ji met him many times and many literary discussions were also done, but this meeting became the first and last.Only after that Ramchandra ji died.In his virtuous memory, Prem Narayan ji and Shri Narayan ji undertook the original and concrete service of Hindi literature by establishing the institution 'Sadhana-Sadan' in Kanpur. To meet the lack of critical material on Surdas, a book named 'Sur Saurabh' was the first effort of the organization. [5] In course of time many literary rituals were completed. A presentation of the same came in front of the literary world in the form of Acharya Ramchandra ji Shukla birth centenary special issue, which was edited by Premnarayan ji during his tenure of Sahitya Sammelan. For the development of Hindi literature, he edited the memory special issue, birth centenary special issue of the conference magazine on many important litterateurs. A book titled 'Letters of some late litterateurs' was published under his editing, which was later published in the form of a book.[6] Certain other important specials also took the form of a book.

Acharya Munshiram Sharma ji 'Som' was felicitated on 3rd December 1977 in Kanpur on his completion of 75 years, in which the litterateurs of veterans like Mrs Mahadevi Verma, Dr Ramkumar Verma, Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Acharya Kishoridas Bajpai, Dr Bhagiratha Mishra, Dr Vijayendra graduate, Pandit Lakshmi Shankar Mishra 'Nishank', Acharya Sitaram Chaturvedi, Acharya Shree Narayan Chaturvedi, Dr. Vagish Dutt Pandey Adi participated. After that Kanpur did not get to see the gathering of such literary scholars for years. On this occasion 'Sadhana Aur Sarjana' Abhinand Granth was presented, which was edited by Premnarayan Shukla and Valmiki Tripathi.[7]

On January 12, 1991, they merged into the Panchatattva. Exactly a year ago, on January 12, 1990, on this day, his guru Dr. Munshiram Sharma "Soma" - Veda Manishi, also died, celebrating his first death anniversary as a festival of remembrance. Wanted and was also striving for the same. Two days ago (January 10) there was pain in the heart, was admitted to the hospital, all the time his focus was on making his Guru's death anniversary successful and in the hospital also trying for the same Taking the blessings of the Guru throughout his life, the disciple Shukla ji, who was absorbed in literary practice, also had a great life on the same day. A unique example of the Guru-disciple tradition was presented. [8]
