Prerana Barbarooah

Prerana Barbarooah is an Assamese Filmaker from Guwahati who started her career at a young age of 18 when she directed a musical for Doordarshan Kendra Guwahati (the Indian regional television network) in 1994, named Once Upon a Time. She went on to com

plete her bachelors in Psychology from Sophia College in Mumbai, and Post-Graduationin Film and Television from St. Xavier’s, Mumbai. Under the excellent guidance of renowned TV Journalist, Mr. Karan Thapar, she assisted him in the production of numerous current affair programmes for BBC (World), Star Plus, Zee English, Doordarshan, DD Metro, SABe TV etc. Starting out on her own, Prerana went on to direct several documentaries and telefilms on development, communication, social issues, tourism etc.

In the year 2007, Prerana Barbarooah won the coveted National Award from the President of India for her film, SPIRIT OF THE GRACEFUL LINEAGE. She is the youngest female recipient of the National Award from the North East.The documentary based on the matrilineal society of Meghalya won the best Anthropological Documentary in the 53^rd national film awards of India. This award winning documentary has been invited to Kerala’s VIBGYOR International Film Festival and Hyderabad International Film Festival. Her documentary, ECHOES OF SUNSHINE has been invited to the prestigious

New York International Film Festival and Hyderabad International Film Festival.The documentary- Stride towards A better Tomorrow -received the certificate of Merit for Outstanding Achievement in Creativity at the Indian Documentary Producer’s Association Awards held in Mumbai,2015.

In addition to documentaries, the director has also made fiction films, NiyorPaiMukoliHol(2015),Jonaki Ali(2014), AbiratoDhara(2013) teleserials, DolarBogori( 2012),Hold My Hand(2008), Gangasnan(2008) and telefilms,EkhoniAkaax(2004), Prattay(2004)all of which have received great appreciation from critics and audiences.

In 2017, Prerana Barbarooah’sdebut feature film, Tumi Aahibaane, was released. It was a huge boxoffice success and critically acclaimed too. The film was screened in New Jersey(US), Bangalore and New Delhi besides Assam. It was selected to be screened in Bhutan by the Assam State Government. It was also invited to DrBhupenHazarika Regional Film and Television Institute for a special screening for the students and faculty.

An active voice for the film fraternity, Prerana Barbarooah has been the General Secretary of Film Fraternity of Assam( an umbrella body for all Cine artists,technicians and workers of Assam) and continues to fight for the upliftment of Assamese Cinema.

Carrying on her endeavor to make films with a human touch, Prerana believes in strong research and meticulous preproduction. Her full length blockbuster, Tumi Aahibaane, was shot in a record 15 days, a feat which is a first in Assam.
