The Pretarolo language is an endangered ancient romance language/dialect spoken by people in the town of 28 residents called Pietracamela in the mountains of Abruzzo, Italy.[2] The language incorporates gestures and body movements to express meaning.[2][3]

Geographic distribution

The municipality of Pietracamela is lies in the western part of the province of Teramo, bordering the northeastern part of the province of L'Aquila. Specifically, it borders the municipality of Fano Adriano to the north and west, the municipality of Isola del Gran Sasso d'Italia to the east, and the municipality of L'Aquila, the regional capital, to the south.[4]

The municipality's economy is purely based on tourism, currently, the town of Pietracamela is trying to safeguard its socio-cultural identity, dealing daily with the challenges of a long history of survival in a hostile environment.[4]

Pretarolo has very complex phonetics, It has characteristics that are typical of the phonetics of the nearby dialect from the commune of Penne, such as the change from a closed syllable of a tonic /e/ to a /o/, as in the word Pĭnna > Penne.[2]

It also has characteristics from the common dialect (koine) of Abruzzo, such as some fractures of the closed tonic vowels in an open syllable, example: Pullĭcēnum > pulcino, or the final atonic vowel (v > [ɛ]), which is typical of the Adriatic side of the mountain.[2]
