Price Cutter is a supermarket chain, founded in 1919 in Springfeild, Missouri by John Ramey, which operates 23 stores located in Missouri. In 1967, Price Cutter was sold to the Cohen Family, Inc.
History
In 1919, John Ramey bought a small grocery store in Springfield, Missouri using the money he got from serving during World War I, and branded it as "Ramey Super Market". Then, after its success, he bought eight more stores.
In 1939, Ramey established the first modern supermarket in the area. Many critics called his investment "crazy". However, in the following years, the Ramey Supermarket became one of the most successful food businesses in the area.
During World War II, supplying all eight stores became too difficult, so Ramey moved all of his assets into his one supermarket and permanently closed all the other stores.
In 1946, John Ramey sold his supermarket to two men from Kansas City. These men then made three more Ramey Supermarkets in 1954, 1957, and 1965. All located in Springfield.
On January 15, 1967, the men sold the Ramey Supermarkets to Cohen Family Inc., and rebranded Ramey Supermarket as Price Cutter. Now, under the leadership of Richard Taylor, Price Cutter expanded out of Springfield by acquisition of rural markets. Richard Taylor's son, Erick Taylor, then took ownership of Ramey. Erick Taylor and Cohen Family Inc. continued to expand the company by buying smaller stores.[1]
