Primary Ethics

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Primary Ethics was established on November 4, 2010 to provide Australian children with community-run ethics classes. Ethics classes use a community of inquiry structure and are facilitated by a trained volunteer using the approved Primary Ethics curriculum. Ethics classes are discussion-based and give children the opportunity to learn skills such as critical thinking, ethical reasoning and respectful discussion. Ethics classes support children to think things through and make well-reasoned decisions rather than those made out of habit or due to peer pressure.[1]

Background[edit]

The classes were designed to be run in the weekly lesson which NSW public primary schools reserve for religious instruction (also known as Special Religious Education (SRE) or Scripture). Special Education in Ethics (SEE) is the name the NSW Department of Education use to refer to the ethics option established by not-for-profit organisation Primary Ethics.[2]

Primary Ethics was set up with the assistance of The Ethics Centre.[3]

Primary Ethics Curriculum[edit]

The main author of the Primary Ethics curriculum is Dr Sue Knight. The curriculum consists of 80 topics that has been approved by the NSW Department of Education as age-appropriate from all stages from kindergarten (early stage 1) to year 6 (stage 3).

Topics include: Being Greedy, Voting, How can we work out what is true?, Laziness, Stealing and Human Rights: Do other animals have them?[4]

Primary Ethics Volunteers[edit]

Primary Ethics volunteers are often parents, grandparents and other interested community members who have been screened for suitability by Primary Ethics and given the training and resources to deliver ethics classes in their local school/s. The classes are offered free of charge to the families of any child attending a NSW public school.[5]
