Princess Margarete of Thurn and Taxis (German: Margarete Marie Therese Elisabeth Friederike Alexandra Louise von Thurn und Taxis; 8 November 1909 – 21 September 2006) was the only daughter of Alessandro, 1st Duke of Castel Duino, making her a member of the House of Thurn and Taxis, and his wife, Princess Marie of Ligne. She married Prince Gaetano in 1909.

Early life[edit]

Princess Margarete was born in Château de Belœil (where are mother resided as the Château was owned by the House of Ligne)[2] to Alessandro, 1st Duke of Castel Duino and Princess Marie of Ligne.[3] Her parents divorced in 1919. She was made Princess of Thurn and Taxis in 1923 when her father was granted the title of Prince della Torre e Tasso and Duke of Castel Duino by Victor Emmanuel III of Italy when Margarete’s family moved to the Kingdom of Italy.[4]

Princess Margarete was a passionate scholar of natural sciences.[5]

Marriage and issue[edit]

Margarete married Prince Gaetano of Bourbon-Parma, son of Robert I, Duke of Parma and Infanta Maria Antonia of Portugal on 29 April 1931 in Paris.[6] They had one daughter:

She and Prince Gaetano both became unhappy in the marriage and started living apart. They obtained an Hungarian divorce in 1940 and a (final) French divorce on 24 January 1950.

Death[edit]

Princess Margarete died in 2006 aged 96.
