Princess Mathilde of Schönburg-Waldenburg (18 November 1826 - 22 March 1914) was the daughter of Otto Victor, 2nd Prince of Schönburg-Waldenburg and Princess Thekla of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.

Early life[edit]

She was born on November 18, 1826, in Waldenburg. She was the sixth child and fourth daughter in the family of Prince Otto Victor I of Schonburg and his wife Thekla Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. She had older brothers Otto Friedrich and Hugo and sisters Maria, Ida and Emma.[1] Later, three younger children were added to the family.

The main residence of the family was Waldenburg Castle in Saxony, which was modernized during 1835–1840. The summer was spent in Gauernitz Castle.[2] Family life was simple and strictly regulated.[3]

Marriage and issue[edit]

The wedding took place in 1847 in Waldenburg, on the groom's birthday - September 27. Adolf had the rank of major general of the imperial army. In 1849, he became a field marshal, and on April 16, 1850, he retired.[4] By that time, the couple already had a firstborn. They had four children in total:

Later life[edit]

In July 1875, Adolf passed away in Rudolstadt. Mathilde outlived him by several decades.

Their son Günter Viktor in 1890 headed the principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, and in 1909 — and Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. Grandson Henry in 1901 became the husband of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.

The princess died on March 22, 1914, a few months before the start of the First World War. She was buried in the crypt of the Church of St. Andreas in Rudolstadt.[5]
