Private Academic Library Network of Indiana, INC. (PALNI)
The Private Academic Library Network of Indiana, INC. (PALNI) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit private academic library consortium consisting of twenty-four institutions.[1]
Mission[edit]
"The libraries of the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana (PALNI) collaborate to enhance the teaching and learning missions of private higher education in Indiana by optimizing resources and services while strengthening leadership and professional development.".[1]
Governance[edit]
While PALNI supported institutions pay annual membership fees, the supported institutions govern the organization as opposed to the traditional membership model. The Board of Directors consists of the library deans and directors at each school with a rotating Executive Committee.[2]
History[edit]
The first and second collaborations between the PALNI supported libraries were two Lilly Endowment, Inc. grant proposals to add old records to a shared, union catalog in the 1980's. Both projects were successful and a shared, online network was formed. In order for the shared, online network to be fully established the libraries had to convince their parent institutions to invest in a new technology: the internet. The formal organization was established in 1992 after unanimous approval by the original twenty-five institutional presidents and PALNI received another Lilly Endowment Inc grant. Founding Director, Larry Frye, suggested the directors name the organization PANIC (Private Academic Network of Indiana Colleges) but the other founding members were not amused.[3][4]
After acquiring the first online library automation system in 1994, online resource sharing between libraries began a year later. Funded by another Lilly Endowment Inc grant, a shared integrated library system (ILS) by the vendor ExLibris was procured in 2001 with additional back-end services added in 2003.[3][4][5] In 2014, PALNI switched to OCLC's integrated library system, WorldShare Management System.[6][7] Since then, the collaborative scope of PALNI has widened to include shared collection repositories[8], dedicated staff, library-based part-time coordinators, open access publishing initiatives, affordable education projects[9], and the like.
Commitment to Deep Collaboration[edit]
In 2014, the PALNI Board of Directors committed to “deep collaboration” between PALNI supported libraries.[10][11] [12]While originally established around sharing library systems, PALNI has expanded to sharing projects, staff, and resources. [10]Expertise developed by each library is returned through skill-sharing, collaborative problem solving, environmental scanning, and information sharing.[13] Deep collaboration allows for deduplication of efforts and cultivates experts to bring the most value to the whole organization. Through "deep collaboration," PALNI libraries are able to offer services and implement products together that the small libraries wouldn't have the resources to do on their own.[14]
Example Activities[edit]
Scholarly Communications Initiatives[edit]
PALSave[edit]
PALSave: PALNI Affordable Learning[15] is the Lilly Endowment, Inc. funded initiative to save students money through the use of open educational resources and library ebooks as course materials[16]. PALNI is a member of the Open Education Network[17].
PALNI Press[edit]
PALNI Press is a collection of hosted open source publishing platforms (Press books, Open Journal Systems, Omeka, and Hyku) allowing faculty, students, and staff to publish open access content[18]. PALNI is a member of the Library Publishing Coalition[19].
Hyku for Consortia[edit]
Hyku for Consortia[20] is a partnership between PALNI and PALCI, founded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to develop the Samvera-based Hyku platform for institutional repository use in library consortia[21].
Digitization[edit]
PALNI coordinates book scanning of rare monographs with Internet Archive[22] and also offers digital library hosting using the OCLC CONTENTdm software[23]
Innovation Grants[edit]
Annually, PALNI offers grants to library staff projects that optimize current patron services or introduce new ones. The projects must be able to either scale across the consortia or be easily duplicated at the other PALNI libraries.[24] For example, a 2019 grant was awarded to a project focused on digitizing 3D objects for online collections using inexpensive equipment and methods that could be replicated at other schools.[25]
[edit]
PALNI originally started with sharing a union catalog (see History) and has expanded to sharing an integrated library system (ILS). Various projects have revolved around the shared catalog, ILS, and collections.
Onebutton[edit]
This interface button presents a single "request item" button to patrons to intuitively request items through multiple systems. It automatically chooses the best delivery source based on availability or other parameters.[26]
Usability and User Experience Studies[edit]
PALNI conducts and reports usability and user experience on the integrated library system.[27][28]
Example Partnerships[edit]
PALNI partners with other non-profits to achieve a project, product, or service more effectively (higher quality and/or cost-saving) by sharing expertise, infrastructure, and funding equally.
Hyku for Consortia (Institutional Repository Development)[edit]
(See Example Activities)
[edit]
PALNI is a member of the Partnership for Shared Book Collections which unites various shared print programs under the common goal of preserving and accessing monographs throughout US and Canada.[29][30]
