Dave Farina (born 1983) is an American educator and science communicator who is best known for his YouTube channel Professor Dave Explains.

Early life and education[edit]

Farina was born in New York to Italian parents and moved to West Hartford, Connecticut in 1987.[1]

Farina moved in 2001 to attend Carleton College, a private liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota, from which he earned a BA in Chemistry in 2005. He later attended University of California, Santa Cruz for a masters program in synthetic organic chemistry, which he did not complete. Farina moved in 2006 to San Francisco and again in 2008 to Los Angeles to pursue his interest in music.[2] He lectured organic chemistry at the Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS), a private university in Whittier, California, while attending California State University Northridge for a masters degree. Farina later withdrew from his masters program when he lost his lecturing job at SCUHS. [3]

Farina recorded his organic chemistry lectures, which would later become the first videos on his YouTube channel.[4]

Career[edit]

In 2015, Farina uploaded his organic chemistry videos to his YouTube channel, from which he received positive feedback from viewers. Farina later covered chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics. As of April 2022, Farina has published over 1000 video tutorials in various academic subjects such as Italian, American history, zoology, and biopsychology.

Debunking videos[edit]

Farina has become notable for his videos discrediting pseudoscience. They are among the most successful videos on his channel.

In 2019, Farina published "Response to Globebusters - The Earth Still Isn't Flat", where he debunked the flat Earth model.

in 2020, Farina participated in a live debate against Kent Hovind, an advocate of Young Earth creationism.[5] Farina later published a video debunking chemist, nanotechnologist, and critic of abiogenesis James Tour. [6] In response, Tour produced a series of 15 videos, titled "A Course on Abiogenesis". [7] Farina responded with a 2 part video series, which featured interviews from chemists Lee Cronin, Bruce Lipshutz, and Steve Benner. [8][9]

Farina has also published videos discrediting alternative medicine, vaccine hesitancy, and plasma cosmology.
