Progreso Hispano News is a monthly newspaper owned by El Progreso Hispano Corporation and headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina..[1] It is published in the Spanish language, thus targeting a mainly Hispanic audience. The newspaper was founded in 1989 in New Jersey and later moved to Charlotte in 1991, becoming the first Spanish newspaper both in North and South Carolina[2]. Today, it circulates in over 10 cities around Charlotte: Pineville, Matthews, Monroe, Huntersville, Cornelius, Concord, Gastonia, Bessemer City, Kannapolis, and Statesville.

History[edit]

Origins[edit]

Progreso Hispano News was initially named El Progreso Hispano Newspaper, and it was founded as a weekly newspaper (before switching to a bi-weekly cycle) by journalist José Herrera in New Jersey, 1989. José Herrera is an Ecuadorian immigrant who arrived to the United States in 1981, and worked in various media-related jobs, such as Radio Wado, and Diario La Prensa. In its beginnings, the newspaper served various areas of New York, such as Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx; as well as some towns and cities in New Jersey, such as Hoboken, Newark, Elizabeth, West New York, Jersey City, Passaic, and North Bergen.

Arrival to North Carolina[edit]

Seeing as though there was no newspaper for Spanish speaking people in the Carolinas, José Herrera moved the newspaper's headquarters in 1991 to Charlotte, North Carolina, thus becoming the first Spanish newspaper in the Carolinas. Initially, it served the cities surrounding Charlotte, Raleigh, some cities in South Carolina, and Chamblee, Georgia. When the newspaper moved to North Carolina, it ceased to circulate in New York and New Jersey. Throughout the years, the newspaper would adopt a different name, and expand the number of cities where it circulates.

In 1999, El Progreso Hispano Newspaper ceased to circulate in Raleigh and Chamblee. Instead, it focuses more on the cities surrounding Charlotte and South Carolina.

2017 - Present Day[edit]

In 2017, El Progreso Hispano Newspaper changed its name to Progreso Hispano News[3]. Beginning January 2019, the newspaper transitioned from a bi-weekly cycle to the current monthly cycle.

To this day, it continues to release digital versions of its monthly issues.
