Project Exodus Relief (also known as Project Exodus) is a non-partisan, volunteer effort consisting of United States veterans and patriots seeking the safe evacuation of American, Afghan partners and at-risk Afghans out of Afghanistan. Project Exodus Relief was founded by Mike Edwards, a retired U.S. Army Ranger. He served with 3rd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment as a rifleman, fire team leader, and an assault squad leader on several combat deployments. He was wounded during a battle in Tal-Afar, Iraq, in 2005, where he received the Purple Heart Medal and the Silver Star Medal[1]. Other members of Project Exodus Relief include retired Special Forces, Navy SEALs, United States Marines, and the Canadian Navy.[2]
Following the August 2021 fall of Kabul to the Taliban, Project Exodus Relief immediately assembled to help locate, provide safe housing, and evacuate at-risk Afghans. Many of the Afghans Project Exodus Relief are assisting are former Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan Special Operations Forces (SOF). These individuals are considered high-value targets and are routinely hunted by the Taliban due to prior cooperation with the United States military.
Mission
Project Exodus Relief maintains operations to provide clothing, food, shelter, and evacuation for qualified American citizens, Legal Permanent Residents, Visa holders, and Special Immigrant Visa holders. Project Exodus Relief assists in maintaining the rescue of citizens and the valuable assets needed to keep terrorism off our “front doorstep”. Beyond providing group leadership, Mike spends his time appearing on Cable News to gain awareness of Project Exodus’ mission; lobbying members of the Senate and Congress and Agencies within the US Government for support and keeping the Team focused on recovery of these valuable intelligence assets that are being hunted by the Taliban.[3]
Project Exodus Relief is a member of the Evacuate our Allies #AfghanEvac coalition as of October 2021.[4]
Rescue and Relief Efforts
Two months after the fall of Kabul, Project Exodus Relief was actively seeking the safe evacuation and relief efforts of 800 Afghanistan Special Operations Forces.[5] Private donations to Project Exodus Relief, Task Force ARGO, and Liberty Alliance Group have helped evacuate over 4,000 Afghans.[6]
Other efforts include continuing to build awareness within the media and public on the deteriorating conditions in Afghanistan and those still awaiting help. As of October 16, 2021, Project Exodus Relief maintained contact with nine American citizens still awaiting evacuation from Afghanistan.[7] Many Afghan soldiers seeking safety in contact with Project Exodus Relief helped provide on the ground intelligence to support "over the horizon" capabilities, and are thus vetted sources to the U.S. government. Many have passed polygraph tests.[8]
Project Exodus Relief is distinct from Emily Miller Project Exodus, a journalist reporting on Afghanistan relief efforts. Despite similar names and social media hashtag use of #ProjectExodus - the efforts and individuals involved are unrelated.
