Propain Bicycles (Bikes) is a German manufacturer of mountain bikes based in Vogt in the Allgäu region, Baden-Württemberg.
History
The brand Propain Bikes was founded in 2006 by Markus Zander and Robert Krauss. The first production model was the downhill bike "Rage", which was developed by Robert Krauss and was available from 2008 on. It was already based on the extremely sensitive and low-maintenance Pro10 suspension system, which is still the platform for all Propain Bikes models today. In 2009 the product range was first extended with the Spindrift, a (then) classic freeride bike based on the "Rage" and in 2011 the Headline model followed, a trail/allmountain bike that allowed Propain Bikes to reach a wider target group and significantly increased its popularity.
After the company operated from Markus Zander's basement in the first years of its foundation and later moved several times from Frankfurt via Ginsheim to Gustavsburg, today's Propain Bicycles GmbH was founded in 2012 and David Assfalg joined as a partner and took over the management. For reasons of space, there was also a further move to Tettnang. David Assfalg, who until then had run three bike shops in southern Germany, changed the sales concept to direct sales shortly after his arrival. The direct sales channel is still an essential component of the company's success today and initiated the further growth of the company.
Propain Bikes achieved the final breakthrough in 2012 with the introduction of the Tyee enduro bike. The tests and reviews in the magazines and online portals certified the bike's excellent riding characteristics at a very good price-performance ratio, making the bike the most successful model to date. In 2014 the model Twoface[1] followed, a new trail/allmountain bike on the platform of the Tyee, which replaced the previous Headline.
Due to the rapid growth of the company and the product portfolio, another interim move to Ravensburg was necessary in 2014, before the company then moved into its own purpose-built company building in Vogt in the Allgäu region in 2016, which still is the company’s headquarters[2] today. In addition, company founder and engineer Robert Krauss gave up his previous job in aviation development in 2014 and joined the company as a further managing director.
In 2013 Propain Bikes made another important strategic decision and launched the Frechdax[3], a full suspension 16"/20" bike, and the Yuma, a 24"/26" bike based on the Tyee, a downhill-suitable kids bike series, which was developed especially for the needs of the small and especially light pilots. Due to a lack of options on the market, Propain Bikes also developed special components for kids bikes under the label 1st Ride, such as a 20" suspension fork, short cranks, etc.. The response to the bikes and the advance into the kids bike segment was internationally huge and uniformly positive. In 2017, Propain Bikes added the 20" Bike Dreckspatz[4], an even cheaper hardtail version.
Another important milestone in the development of the product range was the(re-)introduction of the completely revised model Spindrift[5] in 2017. The bike was no longer based on the platform of the downhill bike as before but on that of the enduro bike and thus developed into an agile super enduro/freerider, which was characterised by strong bike park genes paired with very good uphill characteristics. These progressive characteristics hit the mark and ensured that the Spindrift, next to the Tyee, quickly became the best-selling model in the Propain Bikes product range.
In 2018 Propain Bikes extended the product range with the model Hugene[6] for the first time with a bike developed on the basis of 29" wheels. Depending on the configuration, its purpose ranges from Allmountain, Trail to Enduro and thus appeals to a very broad and also partly less Gravity oriented target group.
After a longer development period, Propain Bikes responded to the demands of the market in 2019 with the e-bike Ekano[7] and finally rounded off its product range without neglecting the typical riding characteristics of a Propain bike.
Until today the Propain Bikes model range, consisting of aluminium and carbon bikes with 140 to 210mm travel, is characterized by a strong gravity orientation in combination with a strong performance and many customizing options.

Pro10 Suspension System
The Pro10 suspension system is based on four pivot points and guarantees high drive neutrality and traction with a very sensitive response. This is achieved by a perfectly tuned suspension characteristic in combination with a floating suspension strut. The Pro10 kinematics also decouples the brake from the suspension as far as possible, allowing full control when braking through corners. The low centre of gravity of the design also ensures safe and agile characteristics.
The specification sheet, which was the basis for the development/design of the suspension system, contained the following 10 decisive criteria:
- Maximum drive neutrality (no pedal kickback)
- Sensitive suspension response
- Best possible traction
- Ideal progression to make optimal use of the spring travel and prevent bottom-outs
- Excellent anti-squat rate (low bounce)
- High stiffness
- Favourable force transmission into the main frame (lightweight construction)
- Robust bearing
- Deeper & central position in the bike
- Low braking influences
Based on the number of criteria, the suspension system was named "Pro10".
