Prosumer Economy

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Prosumer Economy; A new economic system that is created against the current consumption economy[1] and includes prosumers rather than consumers. In this system, producers produce their products in an ecologically and socially just way and establish a supply network among themselves. [2] In addition, producers produce their products in a way that does not harm people and nature, and they deepen and circularize their supply chains within the same system. [3] Therefore, they increase the value they have created among themselves. While the producers support the producers with the products they buy, they ensure the development of such an economy. The prosumer economy grows into the current economy that is based on consumption and profit maximization. As a result of this growth, the existing economy slowly transforms and a new economic system comes to life, where people no longer seek profit and work for a dignified livelihood. [4] This system builds on improved circular supply chains and networks, minimizing the leakage of wealth. [5] As a result of synergetic and circular relationships, waste generation, negative effects on ecology, and social exploitation is minimized and can even be regenerative [6] In addition, prosumers are defined as those who adopt not consumption, but transformation by using, and supporting fair and environmentally friendly producers. [7]

Modern Day

The modern world economy is centered on the massive production, competitiveness, expansion, consumption, and profit maximization, which is increasingly to blame for great economic inequality worldwide. [5] While the biocide and climate crisis are destroying human life support systems, scientists predict that other living things will also greatly reduce their existence [8] The free-market economy even permits social sins like child and slave labor, social dumping, and other forms of inhumane labor to grow under the guise of efficiency to achieve its goal of selling the greatest number of items at the lowest possible costs. [5] The main reason for experiencing all these crises such as global warming and water crisis is an economic system based on the current socio-economic paradigm and competition, and a consumption economy for profit maximization. This system externalizes its damage to the environment to maximize profits. [7]

The Transition to Prosumer Economy

The economy of today pushes people to purchase, use, and discard. The prosumer economy will expand from within the system as a framework created to prevent wealth leakage since more wealth is coming in than is leaving. This will reduce the drive for ongoing expansion and relieve the strains on the environment and its people.[5] When the prosumer economy turns into an “economic system” by essentially encompassing the entire system, it creates not only a circular but also a regenerative economy. The fulfillment of needs, happiness, and harmony with nature will all result from this transformation. The regenerative economy will focus on boosting synergies, healing, and restoring the environment. [9] In case it is impossible to meet all the needs within the prosumer economy, then sustainable life skills should be developed, what can be produced should be produced, and the remaining needs should be supplied by sustainable producers. [10]

Discussion

Complexity theory tells that if enough agents in a given system adopt simple rules which they all follow, the system may shift. [9] In addition, by shifting the profit-maximizing consumer economy into what we refer to as "the prosumer economy," which is an ecologically and socially equitable economy, trends might be reversed and civilization could be spared. [9] In addition, considering that existing anthropocentric capitalist or even Marxist economic systems fuel consumption and growth [11], the prosumer economy conceptually turns to nature and has the goal of ecologically and socially just production and trust-based exchange.
