Protime
Overview
Protime is a Belgian software company specialising in time and attendance management and workforce management solutions.[1] Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Mechelen, it has been a subsidiary of the SD Worx group since 2008.[2] The company has offices across Europe and employs several hundred staff.[3]
History
Protime was founded on 12 January 1995 by Peter s'Jongers, Piet Verstraete, Eric Timmermans and Luc Timmermans to develop time and attendance recording solutions.[4] Initially, alongside its software, Protime sold traditional clocking-in machines manufactured by the German company ISGUS.[5]
In 2005, the company, then based in Antwerp, had more than 40 employees.[6] In 2008, Protime acquired the Dutch company Prosphera, its first step towards becoming an international player, followed by new offices in Paris (2009) and Manchester (2010).[7][8]
In 2011, the SD Worx group became a shareholder in Protime.[9] New offices were then opened in Dreieich, Germany in 2013 and in Luxembourg in 2014.[10]
In 2018, Protime acquired the start-up Horaire Online, now known as Strobbo, extending its activities to small and medium-sized enterprises in the hospitality, catering, and retail sectors.[11]
In 2022, Gille Sebrechts was appointed CEO, taking over from the company's co-founder Peter s'Jongers, who became Chairman of the Board.[12] At the time of the transition, the company had approximately 400 employees across offices in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.[13]
In December 2023, Protime acquired the Spanish company SoftMachine, a specialist time management software provider supporting approximately 450 customers.[14]
In March 2024, Protime acquired Sheepblue, an Austrian artificial intelligence-based workforce planning start-up founded in 2018 in Vienna.[15] The acquisition expanded Protime's automated scheduling capabilities into shift-based industries such as manufacturing and logistics.[16]
In September 2025, Jan Van Autreve was appointed CEO, succeeding Gille Sebrechts, who took on a broader role as Executive Vice President of the SD Worx Group.[17] By 2025, the company reported turnover growth of 65% over three years, from EUR 45 million to EUR 75 million.[18]
Activities
Protime develops cloud-based workforce management software covering time and attendance tracking, workforce planning, and access control.[19] The company serves approximately 4,700 customers across more than 5,000 client sites in Europe.[20] Protime is a Microsoft Certified Gold Partner and operates as an independent segment of the SD Worx group.[21]
The software enables organisations to track working time, manage absences and leave, plan schedules, and organise teams across multiple countries and time zones.[22] It automates administrative tasks including absence management, overtime calculations, and cost centre analysis, and integrates with external payroll systems for direct data export.[23]The platform supports employee self-service through desktop and mobile applications, allowing staff to log hours, submit leave requests, and view schedules remotely.[24]
Protime also provides physical access control systems for managing building security.[25] The company offers hardware-as-a-service options for time registration terminals, including badge, mobile, and biometric clocking-in devices.[26]
In 2024, Protime expanded its product portfolio with the acquisition of Sheepblue, an Austrian AI-based workforce planning start-up.[27]The Sheepblue software provides automated shift scheduling that factors in legal frameworks, working time requirements, optimisation strategies, and employee preferences.[28] The acquisition extended Protime's AI-based planning capabilities from retail and hospitality into shift-based industries such as manufacturing and logistics.[29]

Studies and publications
In April 2024, Protime commissioned an independent study of 2,000 UK employees examining the prevalence and impact of unpaid overtime.[33]The research found that 54% of UK employees were regularly working between half a day and four days of unpaid overtime each month, equating to approximately 19 million days of uncompensated work per month across the workforce.[34] Over half of overworking employees (53%) experienced increased stress and anxiety, and 41% reported feeling burnt out.[35]
Hybrid workers were found to be more susceptible to unpaid overtime, with 33% saying they were more likely to work additional hours when working out of the office.[36] One in five employees planned to leave their job within six months as a direct result of excessive working hours.[37]
Sponsorship
In 2024, Protime became the second title sponsor of the SD Worx-Protime cycling team, one of the leading women's professional cycling teams competing in the UCI Women's World Tour.[38] Both SD Worx and Protime extended the sponsorship contract until 2028.[39]
