History
Robert Allbritton announced the creation of Protocol in November 2019, though its launch was controversial among existing tech news outlets.[4] The site launched in February 2020 and laid off 13 of its employees in April of the same year, leaving about half of its newsroom. According to Allbritton, the layoffs were due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic but did garner criticism and raise questions about the long-term prospects of the publication.[5][6][7] In December 2020, Protocol reported they had since hired six people.[7][8]
Protocol was originally owned by the Capitol News Company, Allbritton's parent company for Politico, until the sale to Axel Springer SE.
