Proving Einstein Right: The Daring Expeditions that Changed How We Look at the Universe[1]

There are many technical and popular books about Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and it's fundamental contribution to the advancement of science and human progress in many important areas. The astronomical tests of relativity including deflection of star light near the Sun have also been closely examined including the results of the 1919 British eclipse expedition.

Proving Einstein Right adds previously unpublished knowledge and provides the reader with a fresh historical perspective, additional areas of focus, and added depth. There are fewer books which mention much less focus on the earlier pioneer solar eclipse expeditions from 1912 - 1918. Gates and Pelletier highlight the 1922 expedition which ultimately measured the exact amount of light deflection predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity with results which were sufficient and exact enough to bring debate to an end for the majority of scientists of the day. The 1919 eclipse results confirmed that the gravitation of the Sun bent light but did not end the debate about how much. The few stars and questionable methodology left scientists including the British astronomers expressing the need for more observation. The 1922 expedition to Australia by the Lick Observatory led by William Campbell photographed and measured hundreds of stars with rigorous technique providing the first unequivocal confirmation of the exact amount of deflection predicted by Einstein's Theory. It would be 50 years before these results were improved by modern technology.
