Synonyms

Pseudomaricurvus is a genus of Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped marine bacteria in the family Cellvibrionaceae.[1] Members of the genus have been isolated from seawater and tidal-flat sediments. Individual species can degrade compounds including nonylphenol, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and carboxymethyl cellulose.[2][3][4]

Taxonomy

The generic name combines the Greek adjective pseudês, meaning false, with the bacterial genus name Maricurvus.[1] The type species is Pseudomaricurvus alkylphenolicus.[1]

A genome-based revision found that species classified in Aestuariicella formed a well-supported group with Pseudomaricurvus in phylogenies based on 16S rRNA genes, RpoB protein sequences, and core genes.[5] Aestuariicella is consequently treated as a heterotypic synonym of Pseudomaricurvus.[1]

The List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature recognizes four species with validly published and correct names:[1]

Characteristics and ecology

The type strain of P. alkylphenolicus was isolated from seawater collected near the Ogasawara Islands of Japan and can degrade para-nonylphenol.[2]

The type strain of P. alcaniphilus was isolated from tidal-flat sediment in Taean Province, South Korea. It is motile and can degrade carboxymethyl cellulose.[3]

The type strain of P. hydrocarbonicus was isolated from a sea tidal flat in Dangjin Bay, South Korea. It is non-motile and can degrade a range of aliphatic hydrocarbons. Growth was observed at sodium chloride concentrations of up to 10% by weight.[4]

The type strain of P. albidus was isolated from surface water of the Yellow Sea. It is aerobic, non-motile, and oxidase-positive.[6]
