Psychiatric News, a print and electronic news service, is the official newspaper of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).[1]:1

Description[edit]

Psychiatric News says it "is intended to provide the primary and most trusted information for APA members, other physicians and health professionals, and the public about developments in the field of psychiatry that impact clinical care and professional practice."[2] It reports clinical and research news about psychiatry, medicine, and biobehavioral sciences. Psychiatric News also describes APA's policies, programs, and actions, including "advocacy, education, ethics, minority interests, and clinical guidelines", and it publishes this disclaimer: "Unless so stated, neither Psychiatric News nor APA guarantees, warrants, or endorses information or advertising in this newspaper. Clinical opinions are not peer reviewed and thus should be independently verified."[2]

The New York Times has described Psychiatric News variously as "the trade paper",[3] "the journal of the American Psychiatric Association",[4] "the newsletter of the American Psychiatric Association",[5] "published by the American Psychiatric Association",[6] and "meant for professional readers".[7]

As of 2020, Psychiatric News reported a circulation of 28,133.[8]

History[edit]

The pilot issue was published in September 1965, "established and edited" by Robert L. Robinson,[9] who was editor-in-chief.[1]:4 Psychiatric News was published monthly through 1969, twice monthly from 1970 through November 2020, and has been monthly since December 2020.[10]
