Psychic art and Auragraphs

This article is about Psychic Art and Auragraphs that are picture diagrams or drawings created and produced as a result of a process in which an attempt is made by a Psychic Artist to use a combination of ESP and or their Mediumistic abilities to produce a portrait impression of a Spirit Guide deceased family member or an Auragraph that is similar to a diagram of colour and symbols to communicate their psychic visions of what they capture in the Aura or Etheric body of a subject. The phenomena of psychic art are predominantly associated with the Spiritualist Movement and instances of such sessions have been recorded and demonstrated both publicly and privately over the years with equal amounts of both believers and sceptics.

Types of Psychic Art[edit]

Psychic Artists Lizzie and May Bangs

There have been numerous claims of mediumistic abilities and a variety of reported phenomena demonstrated both publicly and privately as a way of proving life after death, psychic art being one of them. Depending on their individual artistic ability some psychic artists have claimed to have the ability to communicate with, and produce portraited impressions of Spirit Guides or that of deceased family and friends such as the Bangs sisters who claimed to produce such portraits through developing Physical Mediumship. Others were soon to emerge such as Frank Leah, Alec Harris and more recent Coral Johanson Polge who wrote the book Living Images with Kay Hunter. It is said that the Psychic Artist and other forms of Mediumship can be developed or refined through meditation and self-induced Trance or altered states of consciousness with some cases of the phenomena such as that of the Bangs Sisters who claimed the ability of Automatic writing and Drawing.

The psychic artist is said to use Extrasensory perception to psychically visualise the subjects Aura described as a colourful electromagnetic field that surrounds both animate and inanimate objects. The Psychic Artist claims to be able to translate or transfer this information to a diagram or painting thus providing the subject with a full personal analysis of the information and based on this information offer spiritual guidance and or evidence of the continued existence of the human Soul. Some Psychic Artists also claim that they have Mediumship abilities often using one or a combination of Clairvoyance - (Clearvision), Clairaudience (Clear hearing) and Clairsentience (Clearsense) Clairofactus (Clear smell) Claircognizance (Knowing) and Clairgustance (Taste) allowing them the ability to communicate with the discarnate spirit of the deceased and in this process produce sketched portraited impressions of their visions to evidence the continuous existence of the soul and prove the theory of life after death.

Spiritualism[edit]

Fox sisters

spiritualist movement, that began on the 31st of March 1848 following the famous case of the Fox Sisters who lived in a farmhouse in Hydesville New York and experienced a series of rappings manifested by the spirit of a deceased pedlar who claimed to be buried at the house having been murdered. Leah (1831-1890), Margaret (1833-1893) and Kate (also called Catherine) Fox (1837-1892) played an important role in the creation of modern Spiritualism. Later in 1888, Margaret and Kate made very strong statements against Spiritualism and publicly confessed "That I have been chiefly instrumental in perpetrating the fraud of Spiritualism upon a too-confiding public, most of you doubtless know. The greatest sorrow in my life has been that this is true, and though it has come late in my day, I am now prepared to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God!. I am here tonight as one of the founders of Spiritualism to denounce it as an absolute falsehood from beginning to end, as the flimsiest of superstitions, the most wicked blasphemy known to the world." – Margaretta Fox Kane, quoted in A. B. Davenport, The Deathblow to Spiritualism, p. 76. (Also see New York World, for October 21, 1888, and New York Herald and New York Daily Tribune, for October 22, 1888.) "I regard Spiritualism as one of the greatest curses that the world has ever known." – Katie Fox Jencken, New York Herald, October 9, 1888.In the UK Today the Spiritualist National Union is based at the Arthur Findlay College in Stanstead Hall Essex and offer tutored courses on various subjects Seven Principles as their basis that was given to them through the mediumship of Emma Hardinge Britten with many believing the information was passed to her from the then deceased Socialist and spiritualist Robert Owen whose son Robert Dale Owen continued his work as a socialist and spiritualist and went on to write the book Footfalls on the boundary of another world.

Supporters and Sceptics[edit]

The Bangs sisters and many other mediums throughout history have been confronted by allegations of fraud by many sceptics. Possibly the most famous case being that of Scottish Physical medium and mother of nine Helen Duncan (1897 - 1956)who was the last person to be jailed under the witchcraft act 1735. One of her most famous supporters was then the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Sir Winston Churchill - 19086236948

Another notable supporter of Spiritualism was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle The Bangs sisters were defended by the spiritualist writer William Usborne Moore who stated in his book Glimpses of the Next State that Hereward Carrington who sat with the sisters in 1909 and made allegations that their slate writing was fraudulent. William Usborne Moore initially claimed that Carrington had never visited their house, Carrington, however, was able to produce incontrovertible evidence that he had in fact visited the sisters after which Moore had to publicly retract his statement of defence in a letter of Light, December 14, 1912.

Throuought history Psychic and mediumistic abilities and therefore psychic art has been viewed with much scepticism for anyone outside the belief. However and ironically it can be argued that Spiritualisms claims to psychic art are no different to therapy through art that is being used around the world today. The NHS and modern health advocates in Britain recommend and implement Art Therapy and the Psychoanalysis of such therapy as a form of stress relief and aide to well being, also as a way of communication for those who have barriers to verbal communication such as children and adults with Autism. It has also been well documented that such approaches also use Hypnosis to help with focused attention Distinguished Art Therapists such as Liesl Silverstone who was a member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy who brought a more person-centred approach to the practice of Art therapy, over time she developed her own way of working and worked in this way with educationally disadvantaged adults, on an individual basis as well as with groups and including herself and recorded extensive proof of the scope and effectiveness of the approach. Liesl later founded the Person-centred Art Therapy Centre in 1985 that offered certificated courses including Diplomas and the PCATA soon followed. Person-Centered therapy and Rogerian Psychotherapy was developed by Psychologist Carl Rogers in the 1940's and extended through to 1980. Music Therapy is also offered as a way of non-verbal approach to the therapy of the individual using instruments and general music or singing as a way to accomplish goals within a therapeutic relationship by a professional, such therapy has been noted in Art such as the painting Power of Music by Louis Gallait.

Surrealist automatism Is a method in which the artist suppresses conscious control and allows the subconscious mind to influence the art produced. Artist such as Hans Arp made use of this technique, more notably Surrealist artists such as André Masson adapted automatic writing to art. Automatism has taken on many forms the automatic writing and drawing initially and still to this day explored by the surrealists (Dadaist movement) can and is compared to similar phenomena, such as the non-idiomatic improvisation. "Pure psychic automatism" was how André Breton defined Surrealism, and while the definition has proved capable of significant expansion, automatism remains of prime importance in the movement.
