Pulickal Kalari is a historical building situated in Chenneerkara Panchayath (Local Body) of Kerala state in India. In kerala the kalari is a traditional gymnasium giving training in attack and self-defense. It is believed this kalari was associated with Chenneerkara Swaroopam, a historic, small sovereign state in Kerala established around the 3rd or 4th century. It is also believed that this kalari was also given training for Nair chavers with numerous other Kalaris established during the time of chola invasion to Kerala.During the reign of the Chera King Rama Varma Kulashekara (1090-1102 AD), Kerala was overrun by the mighty Cholas, led by Koluthunga I. The Cholas burnt down Mahodayapuram (1012 AD), the capital of the Cheras and destroyed Kollam (Quilon), the capital of Venad. (This Kalari is situated in the route of the chola invasion from Thanjavur to Kollam). Defeated in conventional warfare, the famous warrior class of Kerala, the Nairs formed suicide squads - Chavar - against the invaders.This situation turned this region into one large insurgent military camp. Though the Cholas could not make enduring conquests, they did manage to smash the Chera empire and turn it into numerous, small independent principalities.
So latter this kalari was associated with the Kayamkulam kingdom, also known as Odanad, existed from around the 11th century until 1746, when it was conquered and annexed by Marthanda Varma of Travancore. After the formation of Travancore the functioning of this Kalari was stopped. At present only the building of the Kalari existed at ambalakadavu ward of chenneerkara Panchayath in Pathanamthitta district.
