PupilPay is a Hungarian Fintech service that specializes in the processing of School-related payments, such as purchases in a school's cafeteria.[1]

The payment service focuses on providing cashless payment solutions for schools, using Contactless payment methods. The service consists of multiple parts, these include the "Portal"[2], which is a Website that users can use to access statistics, a list of past transactions, and order their lunch ahead of time. The other part of the service is "PupilPOS" which is a Point of sale software developed by PupiX Technologies for schools to make transactions and check lunch orders.

Overview

PupilPay was started in December 2019 as a project for Arconic's Innovative Recycling competition in collaboration with Junior Achievement[3]. PupilPay’s main focus is to prepare students "for a cashless future" [4]. The service's main focus is to make schools safer by eliminating the use of cash, and to speed up transaction time[5]. The service is mainly aimed at people who cannot have a debit card due to age restrictions; they plan to solve this problem by tracking the user's spending and top-ups at their school. This would mean the school is responsible for storing the user's money and PupilPay is only responsible for tracking how much of that is spent. The service also offers a weekly or monthly "summary" for users, where they can see a summary of their transactions in the past week or month[6]. The service is aiming to launch in September 2021, a year after their original launch date, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

History

  • PupilPay's 1.0.0 Pre-alpha version was created and finished on December 17, 2019 as a prototype but this version ran in the terminal and lacked a Graphical user interface.
  • PupilPay 3.0.0 was the first version to have a Graphical user interface. The team used this version to compete in Arconic's Innovative Recycling competition.
  • PupilPay 3.0.0 was maintained until it reached version 3.0.9; this version didn't reach production.
  • Version 5.0.0 brought major changes; it was the first version to use a centralized database. This version was very unstable and it was quickly updated.[7]
  • The Point of sale software was first referenced as "PupilPOS" at version 5.0.5 and was completely renamed at 5.4.7.
  • The service developed their own API to process all transactions on a centralized server. The first PupilPOS version to use this new API is 5.5.8.
  • As of February 14, 2021, the latest version is 6.0.9 and is currently in closed beta testing.
