Pupuke Golf Club is located on East Coast Road Road in Campbell's Bay on the North Shore of Auckland. The club is most notable for the membership of Lydia Ko and Michael Hendry..[1]
History[edit]
Pupuke Golf Club was founded in 1914. It leases the course on the Centennial Park reserve, which has been owned by the Crown since 1881[2]. The club has been participating in interclub Pennant Matchplay golf since 1932[3].
Legal Controversy[edit]
In 1932 a member took the Club to the High Court in Wellington: "The committee had passed a by-law decreeing that no woman could play on a Saturday before 3 p.m. and any woman playing after that had to give way to any men who happened along. Some women took exception to this and played in defiance of the rule. They were fined and suspended by the committee. The women challenged this action in court ... the restriction was contrary to the club's own rules"[4].
Notable Members[edit]
- Lydia Ko joined the Club at age 5[5]. She was given life membership in 2016.
- Michael Hendry was a youth member of the club[6]
- Barbara Algie MBE was given life membership in 1988.
