Early Life
Born on 23 July 1946 in Almora in Uttarakhand, Shrimati Purnima Pande has a PhD in Kathak from Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh; Nritya Nipun in Kathak from Bhatkhande Sangit Vidyapeeth, Lucknow; Sangit Visharad in vocal music from Bhatkhande Sangit Vidyapeeth; and Sangit in Allahabad. Prabhakar in tabla from the Prayag Sangit Sa She also has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Lucknow and a BEd from the same university. She has trained in the Jaipur and Lucknow gharanas of Kathak under the mentorship of gurus like M.S. Kallianpurkar, J. Vikramsinghe, Lachoo Maharaj, and Birju Maharaj.
Shrimati Pande has published books such as the Yugadrashta Kathakacharya and Pandit Mohan Rao Kallianpurkar. For her PhD she submitted a thesis on 'A Comparative Study Flamenco of Spain and Kathak of India'. Doordarshan Kendra, Lucknow has carried out an extensive feature and documented her life and work as a Kathak artist for their archive section. She has served as Chairman, U.P. Sangeet Natak Academy; Advisor, Department of Culture, Uttarakhand; Vice Chancellor, Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh; Vice Chancellor of Bhatkhande Music Institute. Having directed and produced several dance-dramas she founded 'Abhivyakti- the Expression', a society for promotion and propagation of culture.
