Pwalugu Tomato Factory
Pwalugu Tomato Factory, also known as the Northern Star Tomato Company, is a Ghanaian tomato processing plant located in Pwalugu in the Upper East Region.[1] The factory produces puree and paste for the local market as well as for export.[2]
History
The factory was established by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president.[3] Construction was completed in 1961, along with several other factories built around the same time to further the Nkrumah government's policy of import substitution.[4] However, the factory did not begin operating until 1973.[4] The factory has struggled to maintain operations. Consequently, it has undergone a number of corporate reorganisations, most recently in 2014.[4]
After an extended closure, it recommenced operations in 2006 as Northern Star Tomato Company.[5][6] At that time, it could not operate to full capacity.[citation needed]
To sustain the factory's operation, President Nkrumah established the Vea Irrigation and the Tono Irrigation facilities in the Upper East Region of Ghana to produce raw materials to feed the factory.[citation needed]
In 2009, through the Ministry of Trade and Industry, assisted the factory with funds to retool the factory, pay the salaries of its staff as well as purchase tomatoes from farmers.[7]
As of 2011, the factory had the capacity to handle 500 tonnes of raw tomatoes per day.[8]
