QCAD is a cryptocurrency stablecoin pegged to the Canadian dollar on a 1:1 basis. It is issued by the QCAD Digital Trust, an Ontario trust, and serviced by Stablecorp Digital Currencies Inc. QCAD is distinct from a central bank digital currency (CBDC). In November 2025, QCAD became Canada's first compliant Canadian dollar stablecoin after the QCAD Digital Trust received a final prospectus receipt from Canadian securities regulators.[1]
Overview
QCAD was created to provide a regulated, fully reserved digital representation of the Canadian dollar, enabling near-instant, low-cost settlement on blockchain networks. It maintains a stable value of one Canadian dollar, backed 1:1 by Canadian dollar reserves. It is intended for use by financial institutions, fintech companies, cryptocurrency exchanges, and other institutional partners.
Stablecorp was founded as a joint venture between crypto asset manager 3iQ and blockchain developer Mavennet Systems.[2] Stablecorp Digital Currencies Inc. is registered with FINTRAC as a Money Services Business (MSB No. M22234558).[1] Investors in Stablecorp include Coinbase Ventures, Circle Ventures, Side Door Ventures, Borderless Capital, the Stellar Development Foundation, and DeFi Technologies.[2][3][4]
History
QCAD launched on February 11, 2020, as the first major Canadian-dollar stablecoin.[2]
In February 2021, Stablecorp closed a C$2 million strategic financing round with investors including VersaBank, DV Private Investments, and Borderless Capital.[2] In April 2022, the company closed a Series A funding round with participation from Circle Ventures, Genesis, the Stellar Development Foundation, and Side Door Ventures. In May 2025, it raised US$1.8 million in a round led by Coinbase Ventures.[3] In September 2025, DeFi Technologies made a strategic investment in Stablecorp and announced a commercial collaboration centred on QCAD.[4]
On November 24, 2025, following a multi-year regulatory approval process, the QCAD Digital Trust received a final receipt for its prospectus from Canadian securities regulators, making QCAD Canada's first compliant CAD stablecoin.[1] The prospectus was filed under an interim regulatory framework for stablecoins applicable in Canada. QCAD tokens issued prior to November 20, 2025 are not governed by this prospectus and are excluded from the QCAD Digital Trust structure and its reserves; holders of these legacy tokens, which included versions on Ethereum, Algorand, and Stellar, are required to contact Stablecorp directly to arrange redemption.[5]
In April 2026, the QCAD Digital Trust issued 650,000 QCAD tokens, bringing tokens in circulation to 651,000, matched by Canadian-dollar reserves held at Canadian financial institutions, according to the trust's independently assured monthly attestation.[6] The same month, QCAD became available for trading on the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken.[7]

QCAD operates as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and on the Base network.[8]
Reserves and transparency
Each QCAD is backed 1:1 with Canadian dollars held in reserves at regulated Canadian financial institutions.[8] Reserve balances are subject to independent monthly third-party attestations verifying that total reserves match QCAD in circulation, and daily verification of reserves and circulating supply is also performed.[8] Attestation reports are published on the Stablecorp website and filed under the trust's profile on SEDAR+.
Regulatory status
QCAD is issued under an interim regulatory framework for stablecoins developed by the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA). Stablecorp Digital Currencies Inc. is registered with FINTRAC as a Money Services Business. The QCAD Digital Trust has received a final prospectus receipt qualifying the distribution of QCAD tokens under this framework.[1]
