QUI Tequila
QUI (pronounced /kē/) is a brand of aged tequila that was founded in 2012 and is produced in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. While most aged tequilas are a dark amber color, QUI is the world's first crystal clear extra añejo tequila.[1]
History
In 2012, three New York City entrepreneurs, Medhat Ibrahim, Mike Keriakos, and Pete Girgis, launched QUI with the goal to “democratize the aged tequila category,” as most extra añejo tequila typically retailed for a couple hundred dollars a bottle. The name “QUI” is intended to represent the distillation process where the heads and the tails of each distillation process are discarded, utilizing only the remaining heart of the distillation. “QUI” was chosen because it parallels the heart of the word tequila (te-QUI-la).
As of 2019, QUI is currently distributed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Texas, and Illinois.
Process
QUI is made from highland agave and aged for three and a half years in American whiskey and French Bordeaux barrels.[1] After aging, QUI is filtered and then redistilled, resulting in the first crystal clear extra añejo tequila.
Awards and Honors
QUI was awarded the gold medal in the Spirits of the Americas competition[1] and the silver medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.[2]
QUI has also been recognized as one of the five best bottles to buy now by The Wall Street Journal[3] and one of "The Best 18 Tequilas In The World" by Men’s Journal.[4]
