Qing Han (chinese: 韩青 ; alias Qinni, QinniArt, March 20th 1990-February 8th, 2020) was a Canadian freelance illustration, layout, painting and background artist.[1] While working on various graphic softwares professionally, she preferred watercolor/gouache for personal projects.[1] She was popular on social media, her popularity being attributed to her inspiring, ethereal drawing, positive spirit and mentorship character.[2][3] Qing accumulated over 3 million followers on various social media platforms such as DeviantArt, Instagram (2.6 millions followers), Youtube, Twitter and Facebook. Her work occasionally incorporated elements reflective of her health issues and battles against a severe genetic heart condition and later, terminal stage cancer.[2]

Life[edit]

As a child, she wanted to become mangaka (comic artist), but her parents were encouraging her to pursue violin, and discouraged her from drawing at home.[4]

Qing discovered DeviantArt, an early and popular platform for graphic artists allowing networking and exchanges, in 2005, and created an account in 2008.[2] She has been one of the first artists interviewed for DeviantArt's Feature Artists,[4] and her success and the support she received encouraged her parents to let her pursue her interest professionally. In 2015 she completed a 365 daily sketch challenge.[4]

She studied a BAA in Animation in Sheridan College, Oakville, Ontario, graduating in 2012.[1]

In February 2017, she was the recipient of the DeviantArt's Deviousness Award for her contribution to the community. The award was given on the basis of her artworks, impact on various communities, and her dedication to mentor others artists on the platform by sharing tutorials and interacting with them.[3][2] She was also featured in Urban-Muse,[5] and in BeautifulBizarre in 2018.[6]

Qing has been a background painter for Disney XD[1] and the Los Angeles based Titmouse studio, but continued to produce and share her own work, tutorials and advice online.[2] She have been praised for both her creative skills and mentoring ones, with a positive, friendly, dark humor style.[2][3] As of April 2018, Han had 20,000 followers, which quickly rose to 2,5 million Instagram followers and and 200,000 Twitter ones by early 2020.[7]

Style[edit]

Qing's graphic style was "ethereal, anime-inspired",[2] and frequently depicted both cosmic objects, beauty, and fragility, and health care elements, fear and pain,[8] reflecting fight between herself and both chronic illness and cancer.[7] Her colors scheme, details, and vibrant illustrations of her recurrent female character were also praised.[7] Her work gathered praises for both her technique and its high emotional sensibility.[8] One of her most popular work, "Starred Freckles" (2016), which show-cast a young lady with constellations-like freckles, inspired a make up trend on Halloween 2016.[9]

Health issues and death[edit]

Qing has been open about her health issues since 2015, when she shared her genetic heart condition and first open-heart surgery, gathering supports from concerned followers.[8] In following years she went through 3 more open-heart operations and numerous hospitalizations,[2] continuing to share her artworks and bold updates of her whereabouts.[8] She published photograph of her sternum keloid scar and shared her experiences of repetitive illness, medical cares, healing, fears and psycho-therapies struggles in which many could identify.[8] In late December 2019 and while 29, she was additionally diagnosed with terminal stage 4 fibrosis sarcoma cancer, sharing her diagnosis online, with thousand of followers sending messages of support.[2][10] She continued to share about her chemotherapy with humour.[2] Commenting on her work "Flowering Wounds", Han said her illnesses and hospitalization induced purple bruises reminded her of "small galaxies".[7] Her sudden death was announced on February 10th, 2020 and confirmed by relative.[2]

Tributes[edit]

Tributes came from all around the world, with artists or fans of various levels sharing back numerous artworks under the hashtag #GalaxiesForQinni.[2] DeviantArt dedicated its February 12th, 2020, Weekly Artist Feature to Qinni (Qing Han).[4] ImagineFX has published a tribute as well.[11][12] In March 2020, South East Asian artists Myrne and Manilla Killa produced a music clip inspired by Qing Han's visual universe, the clip is also a tribute to Qin Han.[13]

Her brother Ze Han made memorial accounts out of Qin's Instagram account, while her Facebook and Twitter pages are occasional active.[7] Ze pointed out maintaining those accounts make sense for both fans and Qin's legacy, by allowing her fans to continue to enjoy her art, while an art book is under consideration. While her account are still popular, followers are declining at a rate of 600 per month.[7]

NFT scams[edit]

In April 2021, an NFT of Qing Han's art was created and put to sale for 600,000 US$ (69,000,000 JP¥) while pretending to be Qing Han. An NTF of her art work "Bird Cage" was on sale in early 2020, while she was in intensive care unit.[7] As Ze's denounced the plactice online, Qing's fans reported the listing and complained to Twinci's social accounts. Twinci alone had 5 other such NTF.[7][14]
