Quanton Commodities, is a UK-based agricultural commodities trader founded in 2022 by Italian businessman Valerio Antonini. Specialising in grains, coffee and cocoa, Quanton is notable for working in markets which are not engaged in by its competitors. This strategy has allowed Quanton to emerge as challenger to the top four agri trading houses: Glencore (GLEN.L), Cargill, Bunge (BG.N), Archer Daniels Midland (ADM.N) and Louis Dreyfus. Quanton has several notable members including ex-VTB banker Ricardo Orcel, who now sits as the company's chairman and Benjamin Mancroft, a member of Britain's upper house of parliament, on its board.[1]

History[edit]

Quanton Commodities was founded in 2022 by Valerio Antonini. Before founding Quanton, Antonini was head of commodities at Casillo Group, an Italian soft wheat trader, during which time he became particularly notable for having forged a friendship and business relation with the footballing legend Diego Maradona. Together, the pair made a series of very lucrative business details with the Cuban and Venezuelan state-owned logistics and trading companies. [1]

In its first year Quanton had turnover of nearly 70 million pounds ($84 million) in 2021, according to regulatory filings, rising to $405 million in the first half of 2022.[1] This saw the company trade over 800,000 tonnes in only its first year of trading. [2]

In June 2021, the company announced that ex-VTB banker Riccardo Orcel would join as chairman. This comes amidst the turmoil invoked by Russia's war in Ukraine which according to Antonini has prevented Quanton from trading any Russian wheat mainly due to the challenge of finding ships. Orcel's arrival at the company has been sighted as part of a plan to raise growth capital ahead of a possible listing of Quanton down the line. In the same month, Quanton sold 60,000 tonnes of German wheat to Iran's state-run buyer GTC - its second trade with an Iranian government buyer in a year. This comes as a part of Quanton's strategy to forge alliances in frontier markets. [1]

Frontier Markets[edit]

Quanton stands out from the top-four traders for engaging in frontier markets. Much of this is a legacy of Antonini's time at Casillo group where he became the first duham wheat broker to sell to the Cuban state company. Quanton is currently focussing its efforts significantly in Africa where it has undergone an ambitious development project to construct a series of silos to improve the country's grain storage capabilities. This project is expected to mill 120,000 tons of maize into flour in its first year. Quanton has recently acquired land in the horn of Africa to begin construction on a logistics project in the port of Berbera aimed to streamline the company's trade through the region.[2]
