QuantumBlack is a London-based worldwide data science consulting firm that is part of the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company and advises clients with its claimed expertise at the intersection of strategy, technology, and design. As of 2019, it had offices in Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Asia.[2][3]
QuantumBlack was founded by Jacomo Corbo, Simon Williams and Sam Bourton in 2009 under the name "Adaptiveflow Decisions", was incorporated in 2011, and had an initial focus of applying advanced analytics to Formula 1.[4] The name was changed to "QuantumBlack Visual Analytics" in 2012, and to "QuantumBlack - A McKinsey Company", once it was acquired by McKinsey & Company in 2015.[5] After the acquisition, QuantumBlack has retained its own brand, decision-making power, and culture – an organizational experiment described by the Financial Times and Fortune magazine.[6][7]
According to QuantumBlack CEO Jeremy Palmer in an interview with Frontier Enterprise in 2019, QuantumBlack sees its niche as being one of the few companies applying advanced data science beyond optimization to business problems.[8] It published at least one peer-reviewed paper,[9] created open-source data science tools such as Kedro and Causalnex,[10][11][12] and has shared data analysis advice with the public.[13]
