Queen of Quezon City[edit]

Queen of Quezon City (QQC) is an alternative beauty pageant for transgender women and gay participants and is officially hosted by the government of Quezon City. The concept of an "alternative beauty pageant" arose from the city's efforts to be at the forefront of gender equality and to spearhead initiatives that seek to address issues faced specifically by the LGBT community.

History[edit]

The first Queen of Quezon City was held on September 12, 2015 at the Armed Forced of the Philippines Theatre in Camp Aguinaldo to celebrate the city's historic ordinance, Ordinance No. SP-235 and also called the Gender Fair Ordinance[1], which protects its residents from discrimination on the basis of one's sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. Nikki Normanson was crowned as the first ever Queen of Quezon City at the AFP Theatre wherein she won numerous other awards to best the other candidates. [2] Among those present in the pageant were Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista. Performers include Asia's Got Talent champion El Gamma Penumbra. The judges had notable names like Miss International 1979, Melanie Marquez, fashion designer, Frederick Peralta, and actor-director, Soxy Topacio.[3]

Pageant Format[edit]

After screening the list of candidates to a select number, the official list of candidates are released to the public through a press conference. Afterwards, aside from the actual pageant preparation, they undergo various immersions and programs to help out with the advocacies that Quezon City has in store for them. Like other pageants, there are portions wherein the candidates get to showcase their talents and their creativity through their creative costumes. In the pageant itself, the candidates are judged based on their performances in the evening gown, swimsuit, and question & answer (Q&A) segments. Special awards are given prior to the announcement of the winner of the respective titles of Queen of Quezon City.
