Queerpk
Queerpk.com, which was set up to offer advice, tackle prejudice and raise awareness of gay, lesbian and transgender issues, was barred by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority. ‘We blocked the website under the law because its content was against Islam and norms of Pakistani society,’ said a spokesman.
Queerpk staff said they were fighting the block by copying the site’s pages and publishing them under different internet addresses instead.
‘We are determined to fight censorship,’ Queerpk.com tweeted.
The website’s founder, who asked to remain anonymous, insisted it did not contain any explicit or offensive content.
He said the ban ‘opposes free speech’.
Homosexuality is technically illegal in Pakistan but the laws are said to be rarely enforced.
Despite the homophobia ingrained in Pakistani law it has been reported in the past that Pakistan leads the world in online gay porn searches and Pakistan is rumoured to have a large underground LGBT movement that is secretly campaigning for an advancement of rights in the country.
