Quezia Jones (publishes academically as Quezia Damaris Jones Severino Vasconcelos) is a Brazilian nutrition scientist and researcher whose work has included nutritional supplementation, gastrointestinal biology, neuroinflammation, the gut–brain axis, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).[1][2] She studied at the State University of Ceará (UECE) and the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), and completed a doctorate in Physiological Sciences at UECE in 2026.[3][4]
Education and career
Jones studied Nutrition at UECE and later completed a professional master's degree in Clinical Pharmacology at UFC.[1][3] Her master's dissertation examined whey-protein supplementation, gut dysbiosis and behavioral outcomes in a valproic-acid animal model associated with autism.[3]
She subsequently entered the doctoral program in Physiological Sciences at UECE. During her doctorate, she undertook a doctoral-sandwich research period at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom; UOL identified her as carrying out research there in 2023.[1] Her doctoral research at UECE examined the neuroprotective effects of Croton lechleri latex in preclinical models associated with autism following valproic-acid exposure.[5] UECE announced the defense of her doctoral thesis in March 2026.[4]
Her published research has included affiliations with the Drug Research and Development Center at UFC and research groups at UECE.[6][7]
Research
Jones's earlier research concerned nutritional supplementation and gastrointestinal biology. She was first author of a 2021 systematic review in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism examining reported adverse effects associated with whey-protein supplementation.[6] The review was subsequently the subject of a published discussion by nutrition researcher Caio Eduardo Gonçalves Reis, who disputed aspects of its conclusions; Vasconcelos and her co-authors published a reply in the same journal.[8][9]
Jones also co-authored a series of reviews concerning fructans and fructooligosaccharides (FOS). A 2020 review in Archives de Pédiatrie examined nutrient absorption in children and adolescents,[10] a 2021 systematic review in Clinical Nutrition ESPEN assessed mineral and trace-element absorption,[11] and a 2022 review in Nutrition Reviews examined FOS in relation to inflammation, oxidative stress, immunomodulation and the gut immune response.[12]
Jones was first author of a 2024 experimental study in Future Microbiology examining whey-protein supplementation and gut microbiota in Wistar rats exposed to valproic acid.[13] Her later work has focused more directly on experimental and clinical evidence related to autism. She was first author of a 2025 systematic review of valproate exposure as an in-vitro model for studying morpho-molecular features associated with ASD.[14]
Jones has also participated in research on cannabinoid-based interventions for autism. A 2025 report in Diário do Nordeste identified her among collaborators on a UECE-led project examining cannabidiol for children and adolescents with ASD.[15] UECE likewise listed Jones among the LANIT/GENIT collaborators.[7] Speaking to the Ceará news outlet GC Mais, Jones said that the available clinical literature reported benefits in some behavioral domains while remaining inconclusive because studies varied in cannabis preparation, dosage and treatment duration, and because long-term pediatric data were lacking.[16]
In 2026, Jones was first author of a systematic review in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry assessing the safety and effectiveness of cannabinoid-based interventions for behavioral outcomes in children and adolescents with ASD.[2][17] The review concluded that evidence for behavioral benefit remained uncertain because of methodological limitations.[17] She was also a co-author of a 2026 Psychopharmacology systematic review examining isolated cannabidiol in animal models of autism.[18]
