Quinie is the performing name of Josie Vallely (born 1990), a Scottish folk singer based in Glasgow who performs primarily in the Scots language.[1]
Career
Vallely was born in Edinburgh and later moved to Glasgow.[1] She began singing unaccompanied Scots song in 2015 after hearing a radio broadcast of the Traveller singer and storyteller Sheila Stewart.[2]
Her debut album, Quinie (2017), and second album, Buckie Prins (2018), were released on Glasgow cassette label GLARC.[3] Buckie Prins was reviewed in The List.[4]
Her third album, Forefowk, Mind Me, was released on Upset the Rhythm on 23 May 2025.[2] The album was recorded with support from Creative Scotland.[2] To develop the material, Vallely travelled on horseback across Argyll, a process documented in an accompanying film and artist's book. The album draws on repertoire from Lizzie Higgins alongside material based on the poetry of Marion Angus and Irish and Gaelic sources.[5][6] The Guardian reviewed it as its folk album of the month and subsequently named it the best folk album of 2025. [7] It was longlisted for the Scottish Album of the Year Award.[8]
