Dr. R. Mahendran[1] is an Indian doctor, agriculturalist, entrepreneur, Vice President of the Makkal Needhi Maiam party and proponent of vanilla farming.[2] Mahendran heads his own Vanilla business[3] which deals with cultivation, processing, and marketing internationally and in India.
Biography[edit]
R. Mahendran was born on June 21, 1963, into a predominantly agricultural family in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, India, to Mr. Rajaram and Mrs. Vijayalakshmi. He was initiated into agriculture by his grandfather, a farmer of repute in the region. He studied at The Laidlaw Memorial High School, Ketti, Nilgiris & St. Josephs High School, Coonor, Nilgiris and has a degree in (MBBS) from the KIMS, Bangalore and studied for (MD) in Internal Medicine at Stanley Medical College, Chennai.
Mahendran is also the founder and CEO of a Pollachi-based company called Expovan, which processes vanilla and offers cultivation advice for growers of the aforementioned plant. He is also a member of All India Spices Exporters Forum (AISEF)[4]
Personal life[edit]
Mahendran is married to Abhiramhi Mahendran. They have four children: Pavithra, Keerthen, Nayanthara, and Nakshathra.
As per declared income & assets during 2021-elections, he had an income of INR 90.54 Lakhs and a total asset of INR 172.52 Crores in FY19-20. Assets as of 2016 was 131.37 Cr.[5] The data is as per The Hindu newspaper published on 18th Mar, 2021 Chennai Edition, Page 4 of 18 under title 'Change of Fortune'.
Political career[edit]
Makkal Needhi Maiam[edit]
- Kamal Haasan, the President of the Makkal Needhi Maiam party, appointed Mahendran as the Vice President November 2018. Mahendran was inspired to enter politics by the example of film star-turned-politician Kamal Haasan.[6]
- He contested from Coimbatore lok sabha constituency in 2019 general elections and secured third position.[7][8]
