Rozel Ahmed (born October 31, 1998) is an international cricket commentator and a former 1st division cricketer who hails from the Mymensingh District. During his playing career, he was a key team member, specializing as both an opening batsman and a wicketkeeper. His aptitude for leading teams was evident early on, as he frequently served as the captain of his cricket teams throughout his school days, showcasing the strong leadership skills he now brings to the commentary box.
Early Life
Rozel Ahmed's passion for cricket started in childhood. His dedication was cemented in 2000 when his mother, Rozey Aktar, lovingly crafted a wooden bat for him. That same year, he played his first match alongside his neighbor's brother, Oli. Rozel quickly became a proficient batter, benefiting from his father's government job, which required the family to travel. These travels allowed Rozel to continuously encounter new friends and mentors, which helped him hone his cricketing skills.

Rozel's early schooling saw him move between local institutions like Ammatul School and Ananda Path School before his father, seeking the best education, successfully moved him to Holy Soul Kindergarten. His academic proficiency was clear from a young age, leading his father to target Mymensingh Zilla School, the city's premier institution. Under the mentorship of the late Habibur Rahman Sir, Rozel prepared diligently and secured the 32nd position in the competitive Class 3 admission test.
Throughout his primary and secondary years, Rozel maintained a deep, active passion for cricket. He was a highly successful captain and a pioneer in school cricket, organizing significant tournaments like the Mymensingh Zilla School Premier League (MZPL). Academically, he earned a Talent Pool Scholarship in both Class 5 and Class 8 (ranking 23rd in the district both times), the latter coinciding with a perfect GPA-5 (A+) in the Junior School Certificate (JSC) exam. He concluded his time at Mymensingh Zilla School with another perfect GPA-5 (A+) in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam.
After an unfulfilling period at Ananda Mohan College, where he still earned a GPA-5 (A+) in the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) and a Board Scholarship in 2016, Rozel faced a significant challenge in university admissions. Despite initial setbacks and a shift from engineering to Arts units (encouraged by his friend Shishir), he demonstrated incredible perseverance. He eventually gained admission to several prestigious programs at Rajshahi University (including Law, IBA, and Journalism) and the Economics Department at Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP).
Choosing BUP to position himself in Dhaka, the hub for international cricket commentary, Rozel achieved his ultimate academic goal. He completed both his Bachelor of Social Sciences (2021) and Master of Social Sciences (2022) degrees in Economics, earning first-class honors in both, a testament to his determination and focus.
Cricket Career
Rozel Ahmed's professional career began in December 2011 at the "Inter-School T20 Cricket Tournament," where he played alongside future national player Munim Shahriar. Rozel immediately showed his potential; during a pre-tournament practice match, he stunned Shahriar by taking a remarkable catch, earning high praise from the more experienced player.
However, Rozel's path was quickly challenged by his father, who firmly wished for him to pursue engineering. This parental opposition became the central conflict of his early career.
A brief moment of hope emerged in Class 6 when Physical Education teacher Shah Masum selected Rozel for a cricket academy. Yet, his father soon intervened, strictly prohibiting him from attending practice, a decision that shattered Rozel’s dreams of a consistent cricket career. Despite the setback, Rozel repeatedly attempted to practice in secret, though these efforts ultimately proved unsuccessful.
After a significant hiatus, Rozel returned to the field in 2015, resuming training at Lion Da’s academy with his best friend, Saad. This renewed commitment led them to the Cricket Academy of Mymensingh in 2016, an institution founded by three Dhaka Premier Division cricketers: Robin, Arman, and Nayeem.
Rozel's talent quickly translated into a professional opportunity: he played a match in the "1st Division Cricket League" of Mymensingh, contributing a solid 30 runs off 48 balls.
In 2019, while at university, Rozel continued to prove his impact. He was instrumental in securing a one-run victory for the Economics Department against the International Relations department in the "Inter Department Cricket Championship," sealing the win by running out the final opposition wicket. That same year, he made his debut in the Last Man Stands Cricket league for "Team 9th Men," showcasing his ability with scores of 18 and 22, complemented by several impressive catches behind the stumps.
Professional Career
Rozel Ahmed's professional career began with a brief foray into the corporate world, working for a month as a Customer Relationship Executive at Mitali International LLC before finding the balance with his university studies difficult. He later briefly engaged with the media as a background artist for a TV commercial and the "Bangabandhu Gold Cup Theme Song."
The true trajectory of his career began on November 18, 2018, when he joined Last Man Stands Bangladesh, quickly earning the title of official commentator. His talent soon brought him international exposure, covering tournaments like the Thailand Open, South Africa Championship, and Cox's Bazar Open.
A significant shift occurred in 2019 when he provided Bangla commentary for the ICC Cricket World Cup on ABC Radio 89.2 FM. Inspired by Australian broadcasters and aspiring to be an English commentator, he continued his radio career as a sports host and commentator at ABC Radio (May 2019 – Feb 2020) and later at Radio Bhumi FM 92.8 (September 2020).
Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 shutdown, Rozel's career gained major momentum. He commentated on the "J'ADOUBE 100 Balls Inter-University T20" and the "3rd Alumni MZS Ex-Students Sports Club" event. His return to the microphone in October for the "T SPORTS 100 Balls Corporate Clash" brought him significant recognition from T Sports, Bangladesh's first sports channel.
His reputation grew steadily, leading to opportunities like the international "Life Springs Dominators Cup 2021" (featuring teams from Russia, India, and Bangladesh) and the "Bangabandhu Four Nations Physically Challenged T20 Cricket Tournament 2022." A career high came in May 2022 when he was invited to commentate on the "Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 2021-22," working alongside the nation's top commentators.
Rozel expanded his repertoire by covering the "Xcel Presents South Asian Pro Boxing Fight Night" and gained crucial multi-sport experience at T Sports as a journalist and commentator, covering badminton and hockey (Hockey Champions Trophy Bangladesh 2022).
Finally, on March 31, 2024, Rozel Ahmed realized his long-term dream by making his international cricket commentary debut during the Australia Women Tour of Bangladesh 2024.
