Rachana Rimal (Nepali: रचना रिमाल) is a Nepalese singer. She is credited for singing over one-thousand Nepali songs in less than two years, which established her as one of the most demanded singers in the country.[1][2] Some of her notable songs include Photo Firimma, Unko Preeti, Paani Chhamkine, and Mineral Water.[3]
Early life
Rachana Rimal was born in Tehrathum; her family moved to Jhapa when she was an infant. She has been singing since the earliest age she can remember. She used to sing Bhajan on local occasions in her hometown, Jhapa.[4] She has also competed in many regional competitions and frequently won. The first competition she won was an online competition held in a Facebook group; one of her teachers recorded her performance and uploaded a video to the group. She received the highest number of likes and won the competition. She received a harmonium as a prize for winning the competition. Another memorable moment she remembers is when she won another local competition and received five hundred rupees as prize money, which she has not spent till date.[1]
Musical career
Rimal initially gained public recognition through the singing reality program Nepal Idol in 2019, where she was one of the participants.[5][6] She managed to reach the top 8 position in Nepal Idol season 3, where she also set a record for being the highest-voted contestant three times in a row.[7] It was a huge shock when she received the lowest vote and was eliminated the following week. It turned out to be her fortune for being eliminated because she subsequently received an offer to sing a song written and composed by Shishir Bhandari, a well-known Nepali YouTuber and media personality. Released in 2020, the song was named Photo Firimma, which went on to become a massive hit. This song brought her into the limelight. Since then, she has performed a variety of songs, many of which have received a great deal of acclaim from the audience, such as Unko Preeti, Mineral Water, and Paani Chhamkine.[4]
Controversies
Cricket match and Cricket Association of Nepal
Rimal posted a photo of herself attending a cricket match, and numerous news sources used the photo with a misleading title. This sparked a rumor that Rimal had been invited to see a match by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), which she categorically denied. She said that she had purchased the ticket on her own and had gone to the game. She was welcomed as a special guest after being recognized by some CAN officials. There was also a rumor that CAN asked her for an explanation regarding her sudden arrival to watch a match without following proper protocols. Rimal and CAN both denied this, saying it was merely a mass media fabrication.[8][9]
Remake of Nabirse Timilai
In early 2022, Rimal sang a remake version of the popular Nepali song Nabirse Timilai, which was originally sung by Anju Panta. The remake was not well received by some viewers and critics.[10] This criticism was caused by the fact that Bipin Kiran, the song's author and songwriter, failed to acknowledge the original singer when the song was first released. Anju Panta made a post regarding this matter on her social media account; she claimed that the composer and arranger originally asked her to sing the remake version of this song, and she was also provided with a new arrangement of the song.[11]
