Rachel Anne Epp Buller (1974- ), born in Lincoln, Nebraska, is a US-based art historian, visual artist, author, professor, and curator. She has contributed significantly to the study of feminist art and the maternal through her scholarly, curatorial, and artistic research and practice. In addition to releasing three books, Buller is widely published in top journals, edited collections, and catalogues.
Education and career[edit]
Buller holds Bachelor’s degrees in studio art, history, and German from Bethel College in Kansas (1996). As an undergraduate, she spent a semester at Philipps-Universität in Marburg, Germany (1995).
She earned an MFA in Creative Practice from the Transart Institute, University of Plymouth (2016), and completed an MA in Art History at University of Kansas (1999). During graduate school Buller worked at the Spencer Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Buller's PhD dissertation in Art History, titled Fractured Identities: Photomontage Production by Women in the Weimar Republic (2004), focuses on the work of Hannah Höch (1889-1978), Marianne Brandt (1893-1983), and Alice Lex-Nerlinger (1893-1975).
She is a Professor of Art History and Studio Art at Bethel College (DATE- ), and is a certified practitioner of Deep Listening (2020) through Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
In 2011 Buller took part in a Fulbright research fellowship to Berlin, working at the Archives of the Akademie der Kuenste, and in 2022 was a Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Arts and Humanities at the University of Alberta.

In 2012, Buller published Reconciling Art and Mothering, a groundbreaking edited volume that puts the voices and scholarship of art historians and artists from six continents into dialogue on a then-scarcely studied topic –- the maternal in art. The book was published by Ashgate (2012), reprinted in paperback by Routledge (2016), and is a touchstone for scholarship on this increasingly popular topic.
In 2013, she published two edited volumes, Have Milk, Will Travel: Adventures in Breastfeeding, and Mothering Mennonite, co-edited with Kerry Fast. Inappropriate Bodies: Art, Design, and Maternity (2019, co-edited with Charles Reeve), surveys the state of the fast-shifting field of maternal art, following on the heels of her first collection.
