Rachel Tashjian is a critic and fashion writer. She currently serves as the Fashion News Director at Harper’s Bazaar.[1][2] Her work has appeared in GQ, she was the magazine's first fashion critic, GARAGE, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, Elle, Bookforum, Artforum, amongst others.[3][4] Tashjian has a cult-following, invite-only newsletters, Opulent Tips, and was a co-host of the podcast Corporate Lunch for several years.[5] She lives and works in New York.

Tashjian grew up reading her era’s fashion writers such as Cathy Horyn in The New York Times and Judith Thurman inThe New Yorker.[6]

She graduated from University of Pennsylvania in 2011.[7] While in school in Philadelphia, she discovered the designer store Joan Shepp as well as the magazine store Avril 50. Seeing designer clothes in real life and styled collaboratively in magazines, she began a fashion blog.[8] She notes reading lots of John Ruskin and William Morris during this period of her life as well as developing a fondness for the designers featured at Joan Shepp such as Rick Owens, Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Jil Sander, Prada, and Comme des Garcons.[9]

Career[edit]

While Tashjian began writing a fashion blog at the end of college, she quickly became part of John Jannuzzi's network of fashion and style bloggers.[10] The collective, network included Tavi Gevinson of Style Rookie, Susie Bubble, and Leandra Medine of Man Repeller. Someone messaged Tashjian via LinkedIn one day and informed her that Vanity Fair was looking for a publicist. She decided to apply to the job and quickly got it, serving as Vanity Fair's Associate Director of Communications and Contributing Style Editor for several years.[11] She's been the deputy editor of GARAGE magazine, GQ’s first fashion critic, and a contributing writer to Vanity Fair.[12]
