Rachel Zegler (born May 3, 2001) is a Columbian-American actress and singer. She is best known for landing the starring role in Stephen Spielberg's upcoming film remake of West Side Story.

Early life and education[edit]

Zegler was born May 3, 2001, in New Jersey. She has one older sister.

Zegler's YouTube account has been active since July 2015.[1] She garnered over 8 million views on her video of herself singing "Shallow" from A Star is Born.[2] The video went viral after she was accused of using autotune and she uploaded a video of herself singing in an empty auditorium to disprove the accusations.[3]

In 2017, Zegler placed second in the sophomore tier of the Sister Rose Thering Essay Contest.[4]

Beginning in 2016, as a freshman, Zegler was nominated for a Metro Award for the category of Actress in a Leading Role for every year of high school. In 2016, it was for her performance of Belle in her high school's production of Beauty and the Beast. The following year, it was for her performance of Ariel in The Little Mermaid.[5] In 2018, she was nominated again for the same award for her performance as Dorothy Brock in 42nd Street. In 2019, she was nominated for her role as Fiona from Shrek the Musical.[6][7]

Zegler attended St. Philip the Apostle Preparatory School.[8] and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in New Jersey on June 2, 2019.[9][10]

Career[edit]

In January 2018, director Stephen Spielberg released an open casting call for the film remake of West Side Story.[11] Zegler responded to the production's casting call tweets with videos of herself singing "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty". She was selected from over 30,000 applicants for the role of Maria.[12] Zegler had already performed the role at the Bergen Performing Arts Center as a teen.[13][14]

Zegler is a parishioner at St. Philip the Apostle in Clifton, New Jersey.[15]
