Radhika Vemula is an Indian Dalit rights activist. She is the mother of Rohith Vemula, who committed suicide on 17 January 2016.[2] [3]
Activism
Radhika Vemula is a Dalit rights activist fighting against caste based discrimination[4]. On 17 January, after the Suicide of Rohith Vemula Radhika Vemula was detained by the police in the evening and not allowed to enter the campus of Hyderabad Central University[5] Since the suicide of her son Rohit Vemula, she has involved herself actively raising voice against caste based discrimination.[6] [7] She has been a part of movements around India against atrocities on Dalits and other marginalized groups. She was a part of the protests against the murder of Jisha in Kerala, she protested against the lynching of Dalits in Una, Gujarat, and she is showing solidarity with the mother of Najeeb, a Jawaharlal Nehru University student who is missing.
Controversy
Vemula was thrust into the public eye after her son Rohith committed suicide on 17 January 2016. Since then, she has been strong voice in the Dalit movement. A police investigation was launched after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj claimed that Rohith Vemula was not a Dalit. However, these claims were refuted by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes Chairman P.L.Punia .[8][9] A year after the incident, the Government of Andra Pradesh sent a report to the Central government, claiming that Rohith Vemula and his family could not be identified as Dalits.[10] The Vemula family took the issue to court.[11] The Roopanwala Commmission was set up to inquire the Suicide of Rohith Vemula.[12] The Roopanwala Commission report faced serious backlash from various Dalit groups stating that the report is misleading.[13]
