Radio Sonar is an English student radio station based at Solent University. The University radio station was founded by Giacomo Shimmings in 1998 and was originally known as Sin FM. The name came from the first 28-day FM radio licence held by the station. After applying for a Low Powered AM (LPAM) licence, the station changed its name to Sin Radio and at the same time became an online radio station. The name of the station was changed in 2009 to Radio Sonar. The rename was in conjunction with all Student Union media, as part of a Sonar Media rebrand.

Radio Sonar is currently led by Station Manager, Danny Humby. Former Station Managers include; Ben Winter, Abbie Brock, Adam Powney.

Committee

The Radio Sonar committee is in charge of running the station and is elected at the end of each academic year for the following academic year by current members of the station. There are 4 members of the current committee. These 4 roles include Station Manager, On Air Manager, Off Air Manager, and Society Manager.

Studios

Radio Sonar operates from one main studio located within their Student Union which has recently been subject to a redesign over the Summer 2019 period.

Awards

Radio Sonar has been fortunate enough to win a variety of awards over the years, including awards at their own SU as well as on a bigger scale under the SRA banner.

Radio Sonar has won the prestigious "Outstanding Contribution to Student Radio" at the National Student Radio Conference in 2010 and again in 2011. In 2012 Mel Lewis won Best Female Presenter. Radio Sonar was nominated in the 2014 SRA awards for 'Best Chart Show' and achieved 3rd place. In 2019, it was nominated for Most Improved Station in the SRA Awards.[1]
