Radpanzer 90[edit]

The Radpanzer 90 Prototype at the Defense Technology Study Collection in Koblenz, Germany

The Radpanzer 90 is a prototype eight-wheeled combat vehicle (Radpanzer) that was developed and built by the Daimler-Benz company on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg).

Due to the good performance of wheeled armoured vehicles such as the Spähpanzer Luchs and Transportpanzer Fuchs (as well as experiences in other countries with similar vehicles, such as France's AMX-10 RC), the Federal Ministry of Defence commissioned Daimler-Benz with the construction of an armoured wheeled combat vehicle in the early 1980s. Corresponding studies had shown up to that point that it would be technically possible to construct a 1990s combat vehicle/armoured fighting vehicle with sufficient armament and armour protection on a wheeled chassis. The combat weight was to be around 30 tons, and buoyancy was waived.

Starting in late 1983, Daimler-Benz developed and built what was initially called the “Wheeled Demonstration Vehicle” and later the “Wheeled Experimental Vehicle (8×8)”. The final name of the vehicle was “Radpanzer 90”. The prototype was completed as of 1986[1].

The basic model corresponded to the required close-to-production design. It had a drive block in the rear, independent wheel suspension and was prepared to accept turrets weighing up to 14.5 tonnes[2]. Assemblies from the Spähpanzer Luchs were to be used for propulsion.

The tires used were the special battle wheel with extended emergency running properties, developed by Continental AG on behalf of the BMVg and first presented in 1969.

Although the Radpanzer 90 was never produced beyond the prototype due to budget cuts and a deteriorating defence market,[3][4] the test results were incorporated into the investigations conducted as part of the experimental program "Test Carrier Armored Transport Vehicle with Integrated Overall Protection", which then developed into the GTK Boxer.[4]

The prototype is now in the Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung (Defense Technology Study Collection) in Koblenz, Germany. The turret is a pre-production model (from model T-02) of the Leopard 2 main battle tank, which is likely not functional and only serves visual purpose.
