Rafaat Haji Hamzah (born 11 May 1996) is an actor, poet and film director from Singapore. Rafaat is known for his artistic style in a variety of mediums such as fine arts, acting, poetry, scriptwriting, art direction, production, and directing.[1] He holds a degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology's fine arts program. He has written notable theater pieces, including Merdeka (2000) and Hablur (1997)[2], which was nominated for 'Best Theatre Script' in the Malay Literary Award 1997/1998. Rafaat served as an advisor for two devised plays, Something About Melayu (2003) and Melayu.com (2004), which were produced by the NUS Malay theater group, DownStageLeft, and received positive feedback from audiences and critics. He has also written scripts for various TV programs, including variety shows, animations, dramas, and info-ed programs. MENTARI 1 received the award for Best Info-Ed Program and Rafaat's script for MENTARI 2[3] was nominated for the Best Script (for Info-Ed). In 2006, he appeared on TV as a judge and acting mentor for the talent search Anugerah Skrin[4]. The following year, he starred as the leading role in Broken English, part of the hit series, Stories of Love. He has demonstrated his skills in TV direction through dramas such as Dompet, Dual, Impian Gadis, and Asap Jahat, which were part of the print-to-screen series, Projek Cerpen[5], of which he co-wrote the screenplay. His other directorial works include Grafiti, Ejen Cinta[6] (season 1 & 2), Kopi Bujang[7] (season 1 & 2) and Mata. Furthermore, his poems have been featured in Singapore Malay newspapers and radio since the late 1980s. His poetry is known for its bold and succinct style, addressing issues that are important to the people. His first compilation of poetry, Yang Bilang[8], was launched in December 2007, and he has since published multiple poetry compilations and a debut novel. He has received several awards, including Anugerah Persuratan (Litrary Award by The Malay Language Council) for his poems Akhir Riwayat Cinta in 2015 and Di Bawah Sifar 2017. He has also acted in more than 45 stage plays and 70 TV dramas, winning awards for his performances. Some of his TV appearances include a lead role in a Father's Day Special 'Tetap Anak Papa' and 'Bunga Tan for Mediacorp.
