Rafael Orrego González (1859 – 2 November 1936) was a Chilean writer and politician who served as a member and president of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, and as a minister of state.[1]
He served in several ministerial posts under presidents Federico Errázuriz Echaurren, Germán Riesco and Ramón Barros Luco, holding the portfolios of the interior, foreign relations, and industry and public works.[2]
Early life and career
Orrego was born in Santiago in 1859 to Marcos Orrego Germendia and Rafaela González. He was educated at the Instituto Nacional and later attended the University of Chile.[2]
From an early age, Orrego was active as a poet and writer and contributed to the periodical press. In 1875, his poetry appeared in La Revista Chilena. He later published a volume of lyrical poetry entitled Hojas de un álbum and a costumbrista novel, Genaro Mencíbar.[2]
Orrego began his public career as an official of the Chilean legation in Argentina and subsequently served at the Chilean legation in Paris. He later left the diplomatic service to devote himself to agricultural activities.[2]
Political career
A member of the Liberal Party, Orrego was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Caupolicán for the 1900–1903 term. During this period, he served on the permanent committees for education and public welfare and for war and the navy.[2]
He returned to the Chamber as deputy for Caupolicán for the 1906–1909 term. On 15 May 1906, he served as provisional president of the Chamber, and on 16 October 1907 he became president of the Chamber of Deputies.[2]
Orrego also served as a minister of state during the administrations of presidents Federico Errázuriz Echaurren, Germán Riesco and Ramón Barros Luco, holding portfolios in the ministries of the interior, foreign relations, and industry and public works.[2]
At the beginning of Barros Luco's presidency, Orrego served as Minister of Foreign Relations. After the parties of the governing alliance reached an agreement, Orrego subsequently organized a political cabinet.[2]
He also served as a councillor of the Chilean State Railways and as president of the Club de la Unión.[2]
Orrego died on 2 November 1936.[2]
